In this paper, future image of the user interface (UI) that appeared in SciFi movies are critically reviewed, especially in terms of their reality. Some ideas of the UI in SciFi movies were actually manufactured as the product but most of them are not. Reasons for the validity in the real world are examined and it is proposed how we should deal wit...

The concept of UX has become so popular that ISO standard (ISO9241-210 [8]) has incorporated the concept But this standard has many points to be criticized: 1. The concept of UX is not clear, 2. The process model of HCD does not cover the whole aspects of UX, including service. 3. The treatment of "satisfaction" is not adequate. All these points ar...

The evaluation method of UX (User eXperience) may help Human Computer Interaction (HCI) practitioners to evaluate web and system interfaces (e-systems) with a mixed panel of users (i.e., non-disabled, older and disabled users). The evaluation of UX might enable developers to release systems without obstacles to access for all users’ needs, characte...

In this paper, the conceptual framework of the Artifact Development Analysis (ADA) and its relationship to the usability engineering are outlined. The ADA analyses the significance of all artifacts including hardware, software, humanware and system. Its viewpoint extends both in temporal and spatial dimensions. In short, it deals with the diversit...
Article
Corresponding to the needs for human resource development in the usability engineering, this study intends to clarify a set of competence discuss the distinction of competence which stems from two contrasting approaches, an empirical approach that this study employs and the idealistic approach that previous studies have employed. This led us to the...

The Japanese concept of "Bunri" fusion, or the fusion between the human science and the natural science, was considered with its similarity to the multi-disciplinary approach based on the experience of "Yaoyorozu" project. Further consideration in terms of its elements and the approach in the context of human-centered design suggested (1) the desir...

Conference Paper
This paper proposes a new type of heuristic evaluation method, called the structured heuristic evaluation method (or sHEM). This is expected to detect more of the usability problems as compared to the conventional heuristic evaluation method introduced by Nielsen (1993, 1995). Based on the comparative study we report the experimental results on the...

For the purpose of comparing the concept of the apparent usability with the concept of the intended inherent usability and the experienced inherent usability, two psychological experiments were conducted to see how much the apparent usability is related to the inherent usability. In both experiments, two kinds of usability concepts showed low corre...

We have developed a Lisp system based on Common Lisp on a main-frame computer. It is called HiLISP, which is the acronym of Hitachi's interactive Lisp Processor or High speed Lisp. We have designed L-code as an abstract Lisp machine code that is used both for the interpreter and the compiler. The HiLISP interpreter executes heavy Common Lisp featur...
