To develop new methodologies to improve teaching in Osteopathy

While specific osteopathic tests often focus on the function of a specific joint, the overall behavioural manifestation (i.e. global movement) reveals the intricate relationship of a whole chain of interlinked subcomponents that is only correctly appreciated when considered in its entirety. Mostly studies agree that osteopathic tests lack of reliability, reproducibility and validity. In addition there are no gold standard to test them against, to teach them and to use it in research to evaluate the impact of osteopathic healthcare. In this way, there is a challenge to bring quantification measurements for clinical interpretation of functional tests used in osteopathy. New methodologies are used in biomechanics to quantify human movements more precisely. For example, detailed kinematic analysis may help to identify specific patterns of movement alterations that are not easy to identify with the naked eye. The objective is to provide a more holistic picture of the underlying impairment. Once meaningful patterns are identified in an objective data driven manner, this information can be fed back to health professionals to improve clinical interpretation, practice and education.
