Introduction
My research is aimed at improving the conservation of threatened forest bird species, especially woodpeckers, and their ecosystems including old-growth forests. Currently I study the ecological requirements of the Helmeted Woodpecker (Celeus galeatus) and co-existing woodpecker species using radio-telemetry, occupancy modelling and density modelling in Misiones province in northeast Argentina.

Understanding the habitat requirements of forest-dependent species, such as woodpeckers, is crucial for effective management strategies in environments facing significant anthropogenic pressures. During 2013–2019, we investigated the variation in the availability of forest structural attributes in two unlogged forests, one forest with active select...
The endangered Yellow Cardinal Gubernatrix cristata is under pressure from habitat loss and from capturing for the cage bird trade. In north-east Argentina it is known to be associated with the Espinal ecoregion, but no information was available on habitat selection within this ecoregion. In Entre Ríos province, Argentina, we first sampled Yellow C...
Home range mapping studies of birds inform about area requirements and responses to land management as reflected by home range sizes and by resource selection within home ranges. Tracking studies of woodpeckers (Picidae) so far have been concentrated in temperate regions. In the subtropical Atlantic Forest of northeast Argentina, we assessed inters...
Few photographs exist of living Ivory-billed Woodpeckers (Campephilus principalis), and no previously known photographs show the species foraging. We found a reference in James T. Tanner's field notes to several photographs taken on 23 April 1939 of a group of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers foraging in a recently dead pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis). We...
How waterbirds respond to environmental characteristics of river systems is of interest because of the high biodiversity of waterbirds in these systems, their ecological roles, and the importance of waterbirds in hunting for sport or sustenance. We studied the influence of natural factors (water‐level fluctuations and environmental heterogeneity) a...
In the Northern Hemisphere, several avian cavity excavators (e.g., woodpeckers) orient their cavities increasingly toward the equator as latitude increases (i.e. farther north), and it is proposed that they do so to take advantage of incident solar radiation at their nests. If latitude is a key driver of cavity orientations globally, this pattern s...

The Ocellated Crake (Micropygia schomburgkii) is a poorly known species with a scattered distribution in Central and South America, linked to sites with tall grass vegetation in grasslands and savannas. The species was not previously known to occur in Argentina. We report on a population of Ocellated Crakes in the Campo San Juan protected area, sou...
Abstract. The Atlantic Forest in southeastern South America is a biodiversity hotspot with high species richness and high forest loss. Three large to medium-sized woodpecker species (Robust Woodpecker Campephilus robustus, Lineated Woodpecker Dryocopus lineatus, and the globally threatened Helmeted Woodpecker Celeus galeatus) coexist in the south o...
Explaining the co-existence of sympatric and ecologically similar species is a central goal in ecology. In woodpeckers (Picidae), co-existence is frequently accompanied by plumage convergence. A particularly striking case concerns three woodpecker species in the Atlantic Forest of South America: Robust Woodpecker (Campephilus robustus), Lineated Wo...

The Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata) is distributed in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, inhabiting environments of xerophytic woodland and savannah. It is considered globally Endangered since 1994. Populations are under pressure from loss and modification of habitat and from capturing for the cage bird trade. We compared in a geographical analy...
We compared species richness, abundance and composition of bird communities during each of the first 6 h after dawn in two types of forests in Entre Ríos, Argentina, in four seasons of 2016. Richness in each of the 6 h was similar. Additionally, richness, abundance and composition of bird communities in summer, autumn and spring were similar betwee...
Woodpeckers (Picidae) are broadly associated with forests but vary in sensitivity to habitat alteration, with some species restricted to mature and old-growth forests, usually because of their foraging or nesting requirements. Roosting sites have rarely been considered a critical resource for woodpecker conservation because nearly all woodpecker sp...

Aim
As a result of their ecological traits, woodpeckers (Picidae, Aves) are highly sensitive to forest cover change. We explored the current land cover in areas of high species richness of woodpeckers to determinate regions where urgent conservation actions are needed. In addition, we identified woodpecker species that are sensitive to forest loss...
The Helmeted Woodpecker (Celeus galeatus), a threatened species endemic to the Atlantic Forest, co-exists with two other woodpecker species of similar appearance: the Lineated Woodpecker (Dryocopus lineatus) and the Robust Woodpecker (Campephilus robustus). These are the three largest woodpecker species in the Atlantic Forest and they show a notabl...
The microclimate of avian nest and roost sites affects reproduction and survival; therefore, environmental placement of these structures is of adaptive significance. It has been hypothesized that, to optimize thermal properties, at higher latitudes avian excavators should orient their cavities more toward the equator. In support of this, a meta-ana...
This is an assessment/determination of status of the Great Slaty Woodpecker (Mulleripicus pulverulentus) for IUCN Red List Status. Assessor: BirdLife International; Reviewers: S. Butchart, A. Symes; Contributors: M. Lammertink, H.S. Baral, C. Inskipp, A. Styring, R. Kumar; Facilitators/Compilers: S. Butchart, R. Calvert, M. Derhe, J. Ekstrom, J. We...
Predation is the major cause of avian nest failure, and an important source of natural selection on life history traits and reproductive behavior. However, little is known about the identity of nest predators in much of the world, including the Neotropics. To identify some of the nest predators exerting selection pressure on birds of the subtropica...
To understand the evolution of reproductive strategies and social behavior in woodpeckers (Picidae), it is useful to compare breeding biology between the two largest subfamilies: Picinae (true woodpeckers) and Picumninae (piculets). The piculets include four species in the Old World (Sasia, Verreauxia, and Picumnus spp.) and a recent radiation of 2...
The Helmeted Woodpecker Dryocopus galeatus is a threatened species of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern South America. It has traditionally been placed in the genus Dryocopus, but it shows similarities in plumage and structure with woodpeckers in the genus Celeus. We sequenced mitochondrial and nuclear DNA that was sampled from live captured Helm...
Responses of biodiversity to changes in both land cover and climate are recognized [ 1 ] but still poorly understood [ 2 ]. This poses significant challenges for spatial planning as species could shift, contract, expand, or maintain their range inside or outside protected areas [ 2–4 ]. We examine this problem in Borneo, a global biodiversity hotsp...
Taking the first IUCN Red List from 1988 as a starting point, I review trends in the threat status of the woodpecker
species of the world, the geographical distribution of (near-) threatened woodpecker species, threat factors affecting these species, and the research output about them. Between 1988 and 2013 the number of genuinely Red Listed woodpe...
The middle spotted woodpecker Dendrocopos medius is a scarce species in northern
Spain and is listed as endangered in Catalonia. We show a marked increase over a 24-year period in a
population of the middle spotted woodpecker in the Aran Valley in the eastern Pyrenees in Catalonia.
The population increased from two pairs in 1990 to 27 pairs in 2010...
Ecological differentiation arising from morphological and behavioral differences, together with social dominance, is known to promote niche differentiation between sexes in birds. The absence of competing species would favor intersexual differences. The Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) is the only large woodpecker in the southern be...

The Imperial Woodpecker (Campephilus imperialis) of Mexico the largest woodpecker in the world probably became extinct in the late 20th century, without known documentation of the species in life. We describe a recently discovered 16-mm color film of an Imperial Woodpecker taken in 1956 by William L. Rhein. The film documents climbing strides, laun...
The Grey-and-buff Woodpecker Hemicircus concretus is a small, short-tailed picid endemic to the Sundaic region, and one of two species in the genus Hemicircus which is sister to all other genera in the true woodpeckers (Picinae). I report the unusual roosting behaviour of Greyand- buff Woodpeckers observed at two roost sites in Kalimantan, Indonesi...
The Great Slaty Woodpecker (Mulleripicus pulverulentus) of South and Southeast Asia, the third largest woodpecker species in the world, is currently in the IUCN Red List category of Least Concern. This woodpecker appears associated with old-growth forests, and the rapid reductions in forest cover and old-growth area in Southeast Asia urged examinat...

The Purana tigrina group is proposed for a supposedly monophyletic group of six cicada species occurring in Sundaland: The Malayan Peninsula, Java, Sumatra and Borneo. One species, P. tigrina (Walker, 1850) from the Malayan Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, Bunguran and Nias Island, is redescribed. Five species are described here for the first time: Pura...
We used ancient DNA analysis of seven museum specimens of the endangered North American ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) and three specimens of the species from Cuba to document their degree of differentiation and their relationships to other Campephilus woodpeckers. Analysis of these mtDNA sequences reveals that the Cuban and Nort...
