While projectification of society has received attention in research, little has been done to exemplify underlying processes and actors involved. By applying institutional theory, we offer an explanatory avenue. Our explorative research advances the understanding of how project management associations influence the projectification of society. To a...
We develop a model of practices undertaken by project managers to address the challenges of organizational fields in an emerging economy context. We anchor the model in a qualitative study of project managers’ activities in a major construction industry firm in India. We make three contributions. First, our study illustrates how the micro activitie...

The topic of crisis in project studies includes an important yet fragmented stream of resear...
Engaging project stakeholders and integrating their user knowledge plays an increasingly vital role in projects to ensure benefit creation of projects. Due to digitalisation new practices are evolving that allow for digital ways of integrating and interacting with future end users by analog and digital boundary objects.

Project managers experience unique careers that are not yet sufficiently understood, and more people than ever before are pursuing such careers. The research on project management and careers is therefore urgently needed in order to better understand the processes and systems shaping the careers of project managers. We address this gap by reviewing...
Projects are strategic and encounter strategic issues in their operating context that have not been addressed in parent corporate strategy. These strategic issues, emanating from changes in the operating context, require interpretation and an appropriate response through the emergence of strategy. This research looks at how projects address strateg...
Organizations have long been projectified, a trend taking hold in society more broadly resulting in a wider range of actors having an involvement in HRM on projects than heretofore. Theorists in mainstream HRM acknowledge the involvement of employees and line managers in HRM activities. In projects, a more diverse set of actors appears to be involv...
This exploratory research examines who supports what aspects of career development on projects. Our main finding is that, although project professionals receive support from formal and informal sources, a compensatory mechanism is at play. When support does not come from direct line managers, project professionals are compelled to initiate informal...
Sustainable social responsibility (SSR) toward multiple stakeholders is proclaimed as an obligation of firms rather than a voluntary deed. Keeping in view the stipulation of sustainability, this paper examines the influence of SSR on sustainable competitive position (SCP) and firm performance (FP) in the context of 307 Chinese small‐ and medium‐siz...

Project organizing is a core principle in many industries. Often conceptualized as temporary organizations (Burke and Morley, 2016), projects are established within and between organizational functions and span organizational boundaries, and populate networks. Projects are important sites of HRM activities (Keegan et al, 2017). We are interested in...

In this interview with Aaron Shenhar, Jeffrey Pinto and Graham Winch, we probe the influence of Rodney's work on the field as it is, in terms of how it is developing now, and how it will develop into the future. We offer three contributions to the field of project management. The first is theoretical where we analyze twenty years of research in key project management...
Digitalization is present in all areas of working life, with strong influence on the way projects are managed and facilitated by tools and practices. Digital project management in construction projects comes in the form of digital infrastructure, more specifically Building Information Modeling, which allows simulation, collaboration and management....
Sustainable development (SD) envisions business and their projects to deliver benefits to a broad group of stakeholders. Yet, projects are challenged to realize benefits to meet individual organization business objectives and value concerns. Given the benefits focus of SD, benefits realization helps to understand how SD can be integrated in the man...

Organizations regularly assume that the culture, values, dynamic and organization of their temporary project organizations are merely a smaller version of the original parent. Given that project organizations are made up of people and teams drawn, in most cases, from outside and inside the parent, these assumptions are nonsensical. But they do expl...

The topic of what human resource management (HRM) responsibilities are devolved from the HRM department to line managers has attracted much interest in recent years. We report findings from a study on the devolution of HRM practices in four project-oriented companies (POCs) and argue that although HRM practices are carried out beyond the HRM depart...
