A key challenge in the modernization of organizations through digital transformation is the successful introduction of new software and software-based services. With a technochange perspective project, success depends on the success of the software introduction. But this introduction often brings a number of unforeseeable challenges. Unrealized benefits of software implementation projects arise from the lack of user integration, which has a decisive importance in the process of change, as they have to implement the required change in mindset and practice operationally. Possible reasons lay in low levels of actual system use, lack of establishing intended usage patterns and finally leading to user frustration A reason of these barriers are solely top-down planned software implementations, in which the demands and needs of users are not sufficiently addressed.
So far, agile methods in practical use remain too much in the development of software and consider users as a requirement generator. As a foundation, this seems appropriate but should be improved substantially to address the change aspects of a software implementation and resource mobilization. A solution to these challenges lies in the significantly broader and deeper involvement of users in the software implementation. To achieve acceptance and raising the potential benefits, it must come to an interactive value creation, which connects top-down objectives with bottom-up initiatives.
This gap is being addressed with the research project ExTEND which is jointly conducted by three research institutions in cooperation with organizations and leads to benefit- and user-oriented ser-vice modules within an IT-based modular architecture for the introduction of software. The focus of the development is the central question:
"How can users offer users services, thereby contributing to more efficient software implementation?"
Through the growing interconnection and individualization of services, service provision occurs more frequently within complex service systems (Böhmann, Leimeister, Möslein; 2014). In order to meet the challenges that occur, the joint research project aims to create a holistic implementation of a service system that supports software implementation projects, by means of bottom-up initiatives with the knowledge and motivation of a wide user base in the process. Hence, projects that follow the ExTEND approach interactively co-create organizational change and aim to continuously involve intended behavioral changes with their operations.
