Introduction
I am a French PhD student in Geography. My research deals with the tourism development in Inle Lake region (Myanmar). I want to understand how Myanmar's political transition has been closely followed by the country's deeper insertion into tourism globalization; how tourism has been constructed locally in the last twenty years, and which stakeholders have been involved in that process; how tourism, as a resource, has been disputed between several groups; how tourism has been mobilized for ethnic and political purposes by local groups. For my research, I resort to several methods. On the one hand, I try to mobilize as many statistics and figures as I can, even though this is a challenge in Myanmar context. On the other hand, I have led hundreds of semi-structured, qualitative interviews.

This study takes stock of the confusion that exists around the environmental state of Lake Inle, a flagship destination of tourism in Myanmar. Reports on the dynamics of its iconic floating gardens and on the evolution of the lake's dimensions in response to land‐use change in the watershed are inconsistent and provide a poor basis for policymaking...

Although little-known, domestic tourism in Myanmar widely outweighs inbound tourism. Its dynamics are a relevant lens to understand Myanmar's fast integration into globalization. Statistical analysis, in-depth interviews and field observation in Southern Shan State show that the domestic tourism system relies on its own stakeholder network (travel...

In few other countries than Myanmar have political context and tourism been so closely linked for more than fifty years. After the open situation of colonial times and the early days of independence, the military junta closed the country from 1962 to 1988, by using a severe visa policy. From 1988 to 2010 a new military regime began to open the coun...

Although Inlay Lake is a major tourism highlight in Myanmar, it also faces severe environmental threats, which jeopardize the whole region’s economic system. Because of weak governance under previous governments, tourism heavily used and abused the local environment, instead of benefiting it. The NLD government has formulated promising intentions,...

This Master degree thesis examines the Inle Lake region (Myanmar) is stepping into globalization, and how the latter is structuring and transforming the local territory. The infamous floating agriculture is highly integrated in globalization, while fishing is facing severe hardships. Tourism is now becming the main and the most transformation-induc...
