Introduction
My interests reside in physiology, ecology, and genomics of fish reproduction, as well as their relationship with body condition applied to aquaculture and fisheries. Also, I work in immune-reproductive system molecular interactions in zebrafish. Previous research carried out is related to the reproductive study of rare fish species in an area as a method of predicting their settlement in a scenario of global warming that favours invasions.

One of the primary objectives in freshwater aquaculture is the search for sustainable systems based on agroecological intensification. In this context, the cultivation of local species is decisive, although requiring the identification of new candidates. Malagasy aquaculture is an example of the development of such an approach. We aimed to deepen t...

Sex plays a crucial role in shaping the immune response of vertebrates, leading to differing susceptibilities to diseases between females and males. This review explores the observed sexually dimorphic patterns in different pathogenic infections, immune responses, and molecular events. First, a compilation of historical guidelines for incorporating...
Article
Over the past few decades, the fishing industry and species conservationists have grown increasingly concerned about the decrease in catches and poor health of European sardines (Sardina pilchardus), particularly in the northwestern Mediterranean region. The species is threatened by a number of factors, including parasite illnesses, rising seawater...

Rearing density directly impacts fish welfare, which, in turn, affects productivity in aquaculture. Previous studies have indicated that high-density rearing during sexual development in fish can induce stress, resulting in a tendency towards male-biased sex ratios in the populations. In recent years, research has defined the relevance of the inter...

Small pelagic fish are key elements of marine trophic networks and are of great importance to the total landing of marine species. Over the last decades, a decrease in biomass and catches of European sardine has been described, especially in the Mediterranean Sea, as an indication of a drop in stock condition. Multiple causes, including direct and...
Thesis
Full-text available
Small pelagic fish play an important ecological role mainly due to their contribution in transferring energy from low to higher trophic levels. Likewise, the capture of these species is in many cases an important nutritional and economic source for many nations. In these respects, one of the most relevant pelagic species is the European sardine (Sa...
Article

In recent years, a drop in the condition of the European sardine has been observed. Although several causes have been attributed to this issue, as overfishing and climate change, little is known about the link between ascaridoid nematode parasitisation and fish status. In this study, sardines were obtained from four fishing grounds along the Medite...
Article
Full-text available
The small pelagic European sardine presents high commercial and ecological values. Due to its cold-temperate water affinity, stocks are affected by global warming. Water temperature rise may change primary productivity patterns, negatively affecting fish condition and increasing parasite incidence. In this context, sardine health status was evaluat...

To achieve sustainable fisheries implies that resources’ management is carried out in accordance with biologically and ecologically relevant processes. In this context, to infer the boundaries of the genetic stocks along their distribution is crucial to avoid the depletion of genetic diversity induced by fishing pressure. Despite its remarkable eco...
Article
Full-text available
Body condition and reproduction data are broadly used to assess the health status of fish because of its implications for recruitment and ecosystem structure. Sardina pilchardus is a small pelagic distributed throughout both Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic. Seasonal trend analysis of energy storage and reproduction was carried out in sardines fr...
Article

The European sardine’s condition is reflected in its reproductive potential, and therefore, in its status as a fishery resource. These values depend on the stock’s distribution and resource availability, which is highly determined by environmental characteristics. Sardines from the productive Gulf of Trieste (in the North Adriatic), located in the...
Article
Abnormal gonads were recorded in male specimens of European sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) captured along the Mediterranean Coast (Northern Spain, Northern Adriatic Sea, and Aegean Sea). Three lobes were identified in the testes of these individuals, what could be considered as gonad segmentation. The prevalence of this abnormality of...

Zebrafish is a worldwide used animal model to better understand cultured fish species; thus, in the last two decades, zebrafish facilities have been created in many aquaculture research centres. However, and despite the attempts of rigorous aseptic conditions for animal husbandry in wet laboratory facilities, the presence of parasites cannot be und...
Article
Infections are able to trigger epigenetic modifications; however, epigenetic-mediating infections in the immune system in fish is currently unavailable. Within this purpose, zebrafish were immune-stimulated with three lipopolysaccharides (LPS) during sex differentiation. Methylation patterns of three immune genes were studied by a candidate gene ap...

Evidences of changes in the fish fauna of Galician waters is documented based on the occurrence of 24 specimens belonging to eight warm affinity fishes. Information about the morphology and new findings of Desmodema polystictum (Trachipteridae), Halobatrachus didactylus (Batrachoididae), Dacty-lopterus volitans (Dactylopteridae) Anthias anthias (Se...

There is crosstalk between the immune and reproductive systems in which sexual dimorphism is a common pattern in vertebrates. In recent years, epigenetics has emerged as a way to study the molecular mechanisms involved in gonadal development, those responsible for integrating environmental information that contribute to assigning a specific sexual...
