The aim of this paper is to describe the process of modification of the research tool designed for measuring the development of personal epistemology— Standardized Epistemological Understanding Assessment (SEUA). SEUA was constructed as an improved version of the instrument initially proposed by Kuhn et al. SEUA was proved to be a more reliable ins...

The aim in this paper is to define an Abductive Question-Answer System for the minimal logic of formal inconsistency mbC. As a proof-theoretical basis we employ the Socratic proofs method. The system produces abductive hypotheses; these are answers to abductive questions concerning derivability of formulas from sets of formulas. We integrated the g...

Since the end of the XX century we are witnessing a practical, or cognitive, turn in logic. Drawing on enormous achievements brought about by the mathematical turn that started more than a hundred years ago, logic now has came back to its Artistotelian roots as an instrument by which we come to know anything. The re-forged alliance between logic no...

This article presents a new tool that provides a methodological context to observe and analyze, both qualitatively and quantitatively, manifestations of abductive reasoning in empirical research. Abduction is a form of a complex reasoning carried out to make sense of surprising or ambiguous phenomena or fill the gaps in our beliefs. Despite the ubi...

We present preliminary results on modelling structure of solutions to a task involving abductive reasoning. Research data were gathered using our new tool—Find Out, which has been designed in order to account empirically for abduction relatively close to everyday reasoning processes, with the necessary level of procedure standardization. The tool e...

We offer a formal account of the reasoning structure at certain stages of a particular class of problem-solving processes, by means of Inferential Erotetic Logic. Our ideas are presented on a commonly accepted testbed for erotetic and investigative reasoning, detective stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. We also address the issue of what kind of reasoni...

Our research provides formal tools for analyses of inferential question processing involved in solutions to a specific class of abductive problems. We model this processing in terms of relations of sifting and funnelling. Definitions of these relations employ logic of questions, situational semantics, and topic relevance. As we show on the basis of...

We claim that abduction should primarily be studied from the perspective of its use. The big question "What is abduction?" is most often interpreted substantively and this distracts attention from the instrumental aspect of this form of reasoning. We propose to address the problem by asking "How abduction is used?". As a result of our approach we s...

In September 2018, the ArgDiaP association, along with colleagues from Germany and the UK, organised one of the longest and most interdisciplinary series of events ever dedicated to argumentation - Warsaw Argumentation Week, WAW 2018. The eleven-day ‘week’ featured a five day graduate school on computational and linguistic perspectives on argumenta...

The aim of this paper is to introduce erotetic search scenarios known from Inferential Erotetic Logic by using the framework of epistemic erotetic logic. The key notions used in this system are those of askability and epistemic erotetic implication. Scenarios are supposed to represent all rational strategies of an agent solving the problem posed by...

The aim of this paper is to present the Erotetic Reasoning Corpus (ERC) which constitutes a data set for research on natural question processing. We describe the theoretical background, linguistic data and tags used for the annotation process. We also discuss the potential areas in which the ERC can be exploited.

This article describes the process of modification and Polish adaptation of an instrument constructed to assess the level of epistemological understanding. The original tool was developed by Kuhn et al. (Cogn Dev 15:309–328, 2000) in order to account for transitions between, and coordination of, subjective and objective dimensions of knowing across...

This paper presents preliminary results of an application of artificial neural networks and Backpropagation learning algorithm to solve logical abductive problems. To represent logic programs in the form of artificial neural networks CIL 2 P approach proposed by Garcez et al. [3] is employed. Our abductive procedure makes use of translation of a lo...

In this paper we model solutions to one of the Erotetic Reasoning Test tasks. Logical framework for our research is set up by one of the most influential current paradigms in the logic of questions – Inferential Erotetic Logic. We propose a weakened version of the relation of erotetic implication, which allows for adequate account on suboptimal sol...

In this paper we present some preliminary results on formal modelling of solving somewhat ill-defined problems in terms of logic of questions. Our evidence consisted of logs of gameplays of “Mind Maze” by Igrology. In analyses of episodes of erotetic reasoning we found that weak version of erotetic implication offers an adequate model for such proc...

We define a mechanism by which abductive hypotheses having the form of law-like statements are generated. We use the Socratic transformations approach as the underlying proof method.
Article
In this article, results of the automation of an abductive procedure are reported. This work is a continuation of our earlier research [Komosinski et al. 2012], where a general scheme of the procedure has been proposed. Here, a more advanced system developed to generate and evaluate abductive hypotheses is introduced. Abductive hypotheses have been...

The method of Socratic proofs (SP-method) simulates the solving of logical problem by pure questioning. An outcome of an application of the SP-method is a sequence of questions, called a Socratic transformation. Our aim is to give a method of translation of Socratic transformations into trees. We address this issue both conceptually and by providin...

In this paper two concepts of psychologism in logic are outlined: the one which Frege and Husserl fought against and the new psycholo-gism, or cognitivism, which underlies a cognitive turn in contemporary logic. Four issues such cognitively oriented logic should be interested in are indicated. They concern: new fields opened for logical analy-sis,...

In this paper we present a new CAPTCHA system (Completely Automated Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart). This proposal, SemCAPTCHA, is motivated by an increasing number of broken OCR-based CAPTCHA systems and it is based not only on text recognition but also on text understanding. We describe SemCAPTCHA from both user's perspective and...

The aim of this paper is to apply the synthetic tableaux method (STM) to the paraconsistent logic CLuN, developed by Diderik Batens. Soundness and completeness of STM with respect to CLuN semantics are proved. It is also shown how to interpret CLuN negation in terms of relations represented by the square of oppositions of traditional syllogistic.

Recently, it has become a custom to treat questions (or, better, questioning) as a game between two subjects. Unfortunately, one rarely goes beyond the scheme of Questioner-Scientist and Answerer-Nature, although the Interlocutor so conceived displays some undesirable features. This paper argues for the idea that logic of questions can be build as...
