Introduction
Maritza Cardenas currently works at the University of Guayaquil. My interest is the assessment, management and conservation of macroinvertebrate communities in marine and estuarine ecosystems. El proyecto actual de su equipo está relacionado con el estado de la diversidad del macrobentos en playas rocosas de la Península de Santa Elena y el efecto de la contaminación por hidrocarburos y metale pesados .

Wastewater surveillance represents an alternative approach to regulating contamination and the early detection of infectious agents and outbreaks of diseases of public health importance. This study evaluated domestic wastewater effects on recreational waters in estuarine and seawater bodies in Guayas and Santa Elena provinces in Ecuador, South Amer...

The possibility of obtaining activated carbons (AC) using cocoa pod husks and banana peels was studied. For this purpose, a previous thermogravimetric analysis was carried out, which revealed that the optimum carbonization temperature for cocoa and banana peel samples is between 180°C and 350°C and that the optimum carbonization time is 1 hour and...

The composition, abundance and distribution of macroplastics (MAPs) and microplastics (MPs) in the Vinces and Los Tintos rivers were determined in three sites (Pueblo Nuevo, Santa Marianita, Los Tintos) from the low basin in the coastal province of Guayas, Ecuador. MAPS were recorded by visual census, covering a total distance of 140 m, and MPs wer...

Aerated ponds are essential in water treatment systems. However, fecal-oral transmission is a common dissemination route for many viruses, for this reason, aerated ponds could become unsafe within the current scenario of COVID-19 global pandemic. This paper has employed a CFD approach to study how the aeration process in an aerated pond can promote...

Plastic pollution has become one of the main global emerging environmental concerns of recent years, especially in aquatic ecosystems where environmental impacts are particularly visible. To improve knowledge of plastic pollution in rivers at lower basin from Guayas province in Ecuador, we investigate the composition, abundance and distribution of...

Wastewater surveillance represents an alternative approach for the diagnosis and early detection of infectious agents of public health importance. This study aimed to evaluate SARS-CoV-2 and other quality markers in oxidation lagoons, estuarine areas and seawater at Guayas and Santa Elena in Ecuador. Sample collections were conducted twice at 42 co...

In this work, the energy potential of red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) litter from ¨Estero Salado¨, specifically on the banks of the "Malecón Universitario" located in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador as densified and torrefied solid biofuel was evaluated. A pellet configuration in size of 6 mm in diameter and 80% dry mangrove litter and 20% binder m...

This study summarises the diversity of living macroinvertebrates and seaweeds from the intertidal and subtidal rocky shores along Ecuadorian continental coast. Benthic macroinvertebrate communities and seaweeds were quantified over quadrants (50 × 50 cm) randomly placed on transects of 50 m length. A checklist of 612 species was generated: 479 spec...

Aim: We evaluated whether patterns of species diversity (α, β and γ) of rocky shore assemblages followed latitudinal gradients (i.e. LDGs) along the South American coasts, and tested hypotheses related to potential processes sustaining or disrupting the expected LDG pattern at various spatial scales. Location: Coasts of South America. Taxon: Macroa...

Knowledge on the status and trends in marine biodiversity, and associated drivers of biodiversity change across the Americas is sparse and geographically uneven. International cooperation is needed to fill observational gaps at these geographic scales and provide information to satisfy policy targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development a...

Invasive species are of signifi cant concern, especially in mega-diverse countries, because they cause negative eff ects such as loss of native biodiversity, ecological alterations, disease spread, and impacts on economic development and human health. In mainland Ecuador, information on invasive invertebrates in marine ecosystems is scarce. The obj...

Rocky shores are areas of high diversity and productivity providing goods and services. Since humans are altering nature at an unprecedented rate, producing shifts in important parameters for life such as temperature, habitat availability, water quality, among others, it is expected that species will respond by changing their natural distributions...
