Most cities, including small and medium ones, experience diverse multicultural populations. The sustainability of such diverse cities requires them to be capable of living with differences and diversity without producing new social inequalities and sustaining old ones. We argue that there is a need for a new conceptualization with which to approach...
Migration is emotive, evoking feelings of hopelessness, fear, or optimism for human and economic development, yet the role of emotions in post-migration community development gains limited attention. This chapter discusses the role of emotions in migration and rural development after the return of migrants, drawing on studies of temporary labour mi...

Many rural communities experience new growth through in-migration. In Herøy, Northern Norway, this is a result of increased labour migration in the fishing industry and a comprehensive effort by the municipality to encourage migrant workers to settle there. This paper addresses the ambiguities of creating stability through mobility. Through a case...

Based on fieldwork and interviews with 18 male newcomers, this article explores constructions of masculinities among in-migrants engaged in several occupations and entrepreneurial activities in Finnmark, in Northern Norway. Building on the concept of hegemonic masc...
Media is a concept as mobile and flexible as media themselves. Media are global, but at the same time local. They are used by individuals, but also by the masses. They are shared, as well as private. The media landscape is moving and changing. Traditional journalism is being integrated into social media. Once created merely to inform us, media toda...

Fossland, University of Tromsø.) of highly skilled immigrants in Tromsø, Norway, undertaken while migrants attended the Global F...

This may be part of what Bauman describes as the ‘liquidizing’ processes of globalization, namely, the making of a ‘borderless world’, which includes processes of ‘de-territorialization’, imply...
When higher education is not enough: Intergration of highly educated immigrants in the labour market Norway needs more highly educated workers. It is paradoxical then, that many highly skilled migrants encounter huge challenges getting a relevant job. Based on biographical interviews and observations with the participants of «Global Future», a «tal...
