Cultural diversity in the classrooms of Catalonia has notably increased since the 1990s, due to the arrival of students of foreign origin and this, together with the discourses to take cultural differences into consideration offered by the European Union, have contributed towards the appearance of the intercultural discourse that lives alongside remedial measures actions. However, the “intercultural education” label hides somewhat different definitions, it is constructed not always referring to the same students and families and, therefore, the measures that are carried out do not always respond to its intentionality. In addition, interculturality in recent years has been taking second place, within the broader concept of social cohesion. Therefore, we felt it would be worthwhile analysing how cultural diversity has been and is being managed in schools in Catalonia, specifically focusing on infant and primary school education. We also look at whether there is a décalage between the discourse and the practice and whether what is being done is favouring improved educational opportunities for the students .
