Description
  • I have studied both biotic and abiotic interactions with Araucaria plant species. I have evaluated the species' vulnerability to climate change; the effectiveness of Brazilian Southern Protected Areas; and the human-plant interaction with local smallholders.

It is commonly accepted that species should move toward higher elevations and latitudes to track shifting isotherms as climate warms. However, temperature might not be the only limiting factor determining species distribution. Species might move to opposite directions to track changes in other climatic variables. Here, we used an extensive occurren...

One of Brazil’s most threatened tropical biome is the Atlantic Forest. This biome has distinct forest formations, as the Araucaria Mixed Forest, a sub-tropical ecosystem distributed through southern and southeastern Brazil, surrounded by Dense Ombrophilous Forest. The defining tree species of Araucaria Mixed Forest is Araucaria angustifolia (known...

Biodiversity across the Neotropics is a result of selective forces along a myriad of ecosystems. The Brazilian Atlantic Forest biome embodies 321 mammal species; only a small parcel of the species is considered piscivore. The Atlantic Forest biota is threatened by multiple factors, from habitat loss to climate changes. We aimed to understand the cu...

People and nature interact since millennia in forests worldwide, but current management strategies addressing these ecosystems often exclude local people from the decision-making process. This top-down approach is the cornerstone of conservation initiatives, particularly in highly threatened and fragmented forested ecosystems. In contrast, collabor...

Ecological attributes enable the identification of Keystone Plant Resources (KPRs), including their community-wide contribution to vertebrate consumers, which are often highly threatened in terrestrial ecosystems. KPRs have been defined by intersecting four ecological attributes that influence local communities of vertebrate frugivores: temporal re...

The escalating deforestation in the Amazon region poses a grave threat not only to biodiversity, but also to climate, ecosystems, and local and international communities. This paper addresses the issue of combating deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon in recent decades and proposes strategies to bring forest destruction to a halt. (...) we aim to...

The Ecological-ICMS is an intergovernmental transfer strategy, characterized by tax incentives. Those municipalities linked to the creation and management of Protected Areas, Indigenous Territories, and water sources are granted with tax compensation. Clevelândia, a small city located in the Southwestern region of Paraná state in Brazil, is one of...

This paper aims to present an alternative for the conservation of Araucaria angustifolia, a tree species from the Atlantic Forest Biome of southern Brazil, critically endangered. The propose is to encourage the dissemination of information to rural landowners about the planting of early araucaria by bud grafting, where pine nuts can be produced in...

Socio-ecological systems (SESs) hinge on human groups and ecosystems, promoting interdependence and resilience to environmental disturbances. Climate change effects propagate from organism to biomes, likely influencing SES. In southern and relict patches in southeastern Brazil, Araucaria Forest is a typical SES due to the historical interaction bet...

Mineral extraction areas represent an environmental, social, and also a food sovereignty challenge for several countries. Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLC) are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of mining activities, particularly those that affect their lands and waters. At the global level, scientific evidence on the impacts of m...

In phytoplankton communities, dissimilarities in the species composition and abundance can be correlated with environmental variability at different spatial and temporal scales. This environmental variability can ascertain periodic replacements in phytoplankton assemblages, favoring, in some cases, the growth and dominance of specific algae groups....

Araucaria is an emblematic species of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest (MOF). The pinhão (the seed of araucaria) commerce is economically important to regional groups, which inluences the use and management of this species. Historically, araucaria populations were manipulated by humans, who identify local varieties, characterizing the possible domesticati...

Madagascar is widely known for its exceptional biodiversity which is, for the terrestrial part, mainly concentrated in tropical forests. This biodiversity is severely threatened by both climate change and deforestation. The FRB (Fondation pour la Recherche sur la Biodiversité) project named BioSceneMada (http://bioscenemada.net) aims at modelling t...
