Introduction
Conservationists have an urgent need to use science as a tool to effectively manage biodiversity problems. While my career is mainly focused on technical assistance—covering a wide variety of projects in ecology, bird migration and conservation biology—my own research includes several small projects. I am interested in computational analysis of large datasets at the population level, to point out situations that can be addressed more specifically following a field ecology perspective. Some topics I focus on are mediterranean habitat management; ecology of poorly-known species (Cecropis daurica, Lanius species); food resource use during bird migration; and how agriculture, hunting, climate change, citizen science and local engagement can interact in information-conservation-ecology dynamics

Using EURING data and geolocation, we describe migration routes and the nonbreeding range of Red-rumped Swallows breeding in the Western Palearctic. One bird ringed in southern Spain and recovered in southern Morocco indicates southwestern migration; geolocator data from five birds from central and eastern Iberian Peninsula confirm migration to var...

Sown seeds are a key component of many farmland birds’ diets due to natural food shortages in autumn and winter. Because these seeds are often treated with pesticides, their ingestion by birds can result in toxic effects. For risk assessment, data on treated seed toxicity should be combined with information about exposure risk for wild birds and th...

Moult is a vital and endogenously controlled process in the avian life. However, birds may modulate their feather renovation properties, such as the extent of moult, based on exogenous factors. Despite the large body of knowledge about moult patterns, numerous questions remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to improve our knowledge about the fact...

Data from remote sensing are often used as proxies to quantify biological processes, especially at large geographical scales. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is the most frequently used proxy for primary productivity. Assuming a direct, positive interrelation between primary and secondary production in terrestrial habitats, NDVI i...

Asynchrony in cereal crop sowing within partridge home ranges makes pesticide‐treated seeds a potential food resource during at least three months per year. Current practice of basing pesticide risk assessment on single‐field scenarios is therefore unrealistic and can lead to underestimation of risks to birds. The selection of sown fields during...

Shrikes species (Lanius sp.) share common ecological traits, but certain variability has been observed. Although there is some consensus on their global conservation problems, research so far don´t describe them specificly or these problems don't affect all the shrikes species. Experts consider that Woodchat shrike (Lanius senator) is threatened by...

The Iberian Peninsula is a wintering area for an estimated 300 million birds. Most insectivorous birds winter in the southern half of the Peninsula, where mild mid-winter temperatures ensure the availability of insects. However, case studies of habitat use by specific species during winter are still rare. A species of particular interest is the Eur...
