This study investigates the effectiveness of imitation and self-imitation techniques for the
acquisition of L2 prosody. For this purpose 19 elementary Chinese learners of L2 Italian
were involved in individual sessions of prosody training, devoted to the exercise of the Italian
melodic pattern of 2 assertions, 2 orders and 2 requests. The items use...
The present study investigates the prosody of yes/no questions (in comparison with statements) in Chi- nese learners and native speakers of Italian. Acoustic analyses and a perceptual test were performed, in order to identify the main trends in non-native productions. Results show the relevance of prosody, which differentiates elementary, intermedi...
Full proficiency in a second language is attained when learners develop rhythmic-prosodic
competence equivalent to that of the native speakers. Since prosodic competence is the result
of a complex set of variables, this study aims to investigate the role of the learning context
in the acquisition of the suprasegmental features of Italian. Three dif...
Recent studies on L2 acquisition, speech synthesis and automatic identification of foreign accents argue for a major role of prosody in the perception of non-native speech. Research on the relationship between pronunciation improvement and student/teachers’ voice similarities has also shown that the better the match between the learners' and native...
In this study we will describe the technique for superimposing the prosodic features of a native speaker’s utterance (donor) onto the same utterance produced by a non-native speaker (receiver). Particular attention will be given to the specific problems of L2 speech and operational suggestions on the procedure to follow will be provided. Suprasegme...
This study addresses the relationship between foreign accent and credibility. A hundred seventy-five native Italian listeners, after hearing a set of 10 news uttered in Italian by one native speaker of Italian and four non native speakers of L1 Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic and Japanese, were asked to assess the comprehensibility, i. e. listener’s es...
This study intends to verify through perceptual tests conducted on original and artificially modified speech whether a relationship exists among the degree of comprehensibility of an utterance, the foreign accent and the credibility of the message. Four bizarre-but-true news read in Italian by four non-native speakers were artificially modified wit...
This study addresses the relationship between foreign accent and credibility. Three hundred native Italian listeners, after hearing a set of 12 news uttered in Italian by two native speakers of Italian and two native speakers of Chinese, were asked to assess the truthfulness of each news item. There was no evidence of a correlation between degree o...
Lo studio affronta il tema del rapporto tra accento straniero e credibilità con riferimento al parlato letto. Due gruppi di ascoltatori italiani madrelingua, 301 studenti universitari, età media 20 anni, e 163 ragazzi della scuola primaria e secondaria di primo grado, tra i 9 e i 12 anni di età, suddivisi al loro interno in quattro sottogruppi omog...
