- I carried out research on Social Studies of Science, Technology and Medicine in Latin America. I also taught a course on this subject (both graduate and undergraduate).
Suicide is a multi-disciplinary subject where interdisciplinary research and practice is still insufficient. This book covers the most relevant scientific approaches to suicide as well as lived-experience social movements. Through an interdisciplinary approach, actual suicide rates in lifting and the strength sports are discussed, and suicide prote...
Many sports have been using different types of accessories in order to increase the safety or performance of athletes. Among these stands out the modalities powerlifting, which presents specific workout accessories: clothes stand and elastic bands? However, the use and efficiency of such accessories still some controversy because of its real effici...
There is a contradiction between the perceptions held by different sectors of the Establishment with regard to the questions of hunger and nutrition in Brazil. On the one hand, the flagship of the present Brazilian government's social policy is the "Fome Zero" program. This program is based on the notion that the condition of hunger is socially rel...
Brazil is considered to have an immature national innovation system. One significant situation that contributes to it is that Brazil concentrates its research efforts and inventiveness in academic environments, while the private sector has very little access to this activity. Measures are being taken to correct this situation. Nevertheless, scienti...
Prostate cancer (PCa) is a major health hazard. In the USA alone, it affects approximately 10 million men. Its incidence is higher than Breast Cancer?s (BCa) and it kills approximately the same number of men per year as BCa kills women. Nevertheless, PCa receives about six times fewer federal funds for research and prevention. We have investigated...
American Trypanosomiasis, known as Chagas disease, was discovered in 1909 under peculiar circumstances: its discoverer, Carlos Chagas, was sent to a small village of Central Brazil to carry out an anti-malaria campaign when he came across a blood sucking insectthe vector for the parasite infection. He had been alerted to the coincidence of peculiar...

Periphral countries are at a disadvantage with respect to the construction of scientific knowledge, which is mostly carried out by a small number of traditional core loci countries. However, in a few cases, groups of scientists are able to break through exclusion barriers. Sometimes they tackle relevant issues, share values and procedures with core...
Carlos Chagas, a Brazilian physician, discovered the American trypanosomiasis in 1909. Like other remarkable discoveries of those days, his work helped to articulate the insect-vector theory and other theoretical guidelines in tropical medicine. Unlike all other discoveries, all the stages of this work were accomplished in a few months and by a sin...
Nature displays a pattern of ecosystems in which it is inherently divided. Each ecosystem constitutes a set of functional relations describable and observable as a whole from the outside. These seem to be the main concepts expressed in pictorial form in the ecosystem diagrams analyzed by J. Taylor and A. Blum (1991). The authors stress the search f...
Vitellogenin and vitellin of Musca domestica are composed of about five subunits with apparent molecular weights of 54, 52, 51, 48 and 46 K. The native vitellogenin and vitellin were not studied and therefore the relationship between the subunits and the native proteins is not known. At the beginning of vitellogenesis the fat bodies are probably the...
I am very interested in knowing your stand on the use of absolute (1RM, no bodyweight parameter considered) V relative strength (RS coefficients) on:
- education about strength
- strength and power assessment
I have been told that, traditionally, in sports science, absolute strength is the accepted measure. I haven't found support for this claim.
I'd like to write a short science-education article on this.
I have reasons to favor relative strength - both scientific and educational.
Please, feel free to share any and everything: opinions and files.
Sorry to phrase it that way. I am looking into the relationship between dance and strength through three different perspectives:
- dance as strength
- strength for dance
- dance for strength (and sports)
References and comments are welcome. I would especially appreciate a physical therapy based input on dance as a pre-hab tool for athletes.
