Interactive technologies have become a part of many different artistic practices. Nowadays artists make use of sensors, electronic circuits, computation, and algorithms to create engaging aesthetic experiences. Composing Interactions - An Artist’s Guide to Building Expressive, Interactive Systems brings together aesthetic considerations, practical...

With electronics and code as an essential part of new musical instruments, the boundaries between composition, instrument design and performance are blurring. With code that can be changed and compiled on the fly, the design of an instrument becomes a fluid process, which can even be a performance in itself. Starting with an example from my own art...

The Modality Project explores the idea of highly modal performance instruments i.e., setups where a small set of controllers can be used to play a wide variety of sound processes by changing control constellations on the fly. The Modality Toolkit is a SuperCollider library which simplifies the creation of such instruments. To this end, a common cod...

The context of collaborative, interactive performance and installation is a challenging environment for developing technology that will enable creating such artistic works. Code becomes a medium in which artists express themselves and the challenges of writing code in a context where problems are created as they are being solved demand flexibility...

In the context of current developments towards an exchange format for spatial audio, it is important to consider the interactions and tensions between spatial composition techniques and spatial audio technologies. This paper gives an overview of common compositional techniques and audio technologies used for spatial compositions, and discusses vari...

SenseStage is a research-creation project to develop a wireless sensor network infrastructure for live per-formance and interactive, real-time environments. The project is motivated by the economic and tech-nical constraints of live performance contexts and the lack of existing tools for artistic work with wire-less sensing platforms. The developme...

The SenseWorld DataNetwork framework addresses the is-sue of sharing and manipulating multiple data streams among different media systems in a heterogenous interactive per-formance environment. It is intended to facilitate the cre-ation, rehearsal process and performance practice of collab-orative interactive media art works, by making the sharing...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
This paper describes recent work on a large-scale, interactive dance theater performance entitled Schwelle as a platform to pose critical questions around the conception, design and implementation of what is commonly labeled responsive audio environments. The authors first discuss some principal issues in the design of responsive audio environments...
Conference Paper
For large Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) systems multiple computers are needed for rendering to manage the necessary amount of audio channels. To make this possible with the sWONDER software, the software was completely restructured and divided into several separate programs which an run on multiple computers, communicating with each other via OpenSoun...

This paper describes work on a newly created large-scale interactive theater performance entitled Schwelle (Thresh-olds). The authors discuss an innovative approach towards the conception, development and implementation of dynamic and responsive audio scenography: a constantly evolving, multi-layered sound design generated by continuous input from...
Thesis

In order to reproduce arbitrarily shaped sources with Wave Field Synthesis, source points outside of the horizontal plane have to be taken into account. The loudspeaker driv-er function for these points is derived mathematically. The errors made for elevated points are discussed and simula-tions show the effect of these errors.

WONDER is a software interface for using Wave Field Synthesis for audio spatialisation. Its user group is aimed to be composers of electronic music or sound artists. The program provides a graphical interface as well as the possibility to control it externally using the OpenSoundControl protocol. The paper describes improvements and updates to the...

Wave Field Synthesis offers new possibilities for composers of electronic music and to sound artists to add the dimension of space to a composition. Unlike most other spatialisation techniques, Wave Field Synthesis is suitable for concert situations, where the listening area needs to be large. Using the software program "WONDER", developed at the T...

The STRIMIDILATOR is an instrument that uses the deviationand thevibration of strings as MIDI-controllers. This method of control gives the user direct tactile force feedback and allows for subtle control. The development of the instrument and its different functions are described.

Wave Field Synthesis offers new possibilities for composers of electronic music to add the dimension of space to a composition. Unlike most other spatialisation techniques, Wave Field Synthesis is suitable for concert situations, where the listening area needs to be large. It is shown that an affordable system can be built to apply the technique an...

Collaborative, interactive performances and instal-lations are a challenging coding environment. Su-perCollider is an especially flexible audio program-ming language suitable to use in this context; and in this paper I will reflect on 5 years of working with this language in three professional projects, involv-ing dance and interactive environments...
