The context of daily household needs of rural communities, particularly the needs for water, often remains insufficiently considered in tropical forest management as it is facing an important decision-making trade-off between profit and preservation. We conducted a choice experiment study to elicit preferences of the rural community members in Cent...

Although green interventions, like nature-based solutions, contribute to more sustainable urban environments and provide ecosystem services to urban populations, some impacts are not well understood. This particularly applies to social impacts in the domain of environmental justice, including (green) gentrification. Gentrification refers to a proce...
Article
There is an increased interest in applying nature for addressing various urban challenges, such as those related to air pollution, climate change, and health, but the economic value of urban nature is not always well recognized. In this study we present a meta-analysis of a rapidly expanding literature that applied stated preference valuation metho...

An example of a benefit transfer for the case of Strasbourg is presented using a BTF from Bockarjova et al. (2020, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecolecon.2019.106480). The Benefit Transfer Method has generated an up-to-date value transfer function through which we can monetise the benefits that urban nature-based solutions produce for the public. This...

In this article, we propose an integrated direct and indirect flood risk model for small-and large-scale flood events, allowing for dynamic modeling of total economic losses from a flood event to a full economic recovery. A novel approach is taken that translates direct losses of both capital and labor into production losses using the Cobb-Douglas...

The transition from fuel cars to electric cars is a large-scale process involving many interactions between consumers and other stakeholders over decades. To explore how policies may interact with consumer behavior over such a long time period, we developed an agent-based social simulation model. In this model, detailed data of 1795 respondents hav...

We focus on two central aspects of long-term care (LTC) policy change: the housing situation of elderly people and wealth distribution of elderly people in connection to their use and expenditure of LTC. -Elderly people have a strong preference to staying put / ageing in place. -Elderly people are myopic in their housing & care decisions. Often, th...

This paper addresses two important questions. First, how does (housing) wealth relate to the need and use of long term care (LTC) among the elderly? And second, what is the simultaneous distribution of LTC costs and out-of-pocket-payments on the one hand, and (housing) wealth among the elderly on the other hand? Our findings reveal that mean LTC co...

In this paper we apply the updated consumat approach to the case of diffusion of electric cars. We will discuss how data from a large sample can be used to parameterize a number of main behavioural drivers, and how these relate to behavioural processes. At this stage we explain how the data fit in the framework, and whereas a model is currently und...

We study long-term care demand in the Netherlands for a sample of elderly Dutch households using detailed administrative data. Long-term care in the Netherlands is provided by a public health care system that is generous in comparison to that in many other countries, but offers few possibilities for differentiation. Moving to a nursing home is gene...

Three major phases of adoption are distinguished: introduction, growth and maturity. Adoption stages are further integrated into an SP study to elicit individual preferences for conventional, hybrid and full electric ve...
Article
In this paper, we apply a dynamic innovation diffusion framework to model adoption of full electric vehicles where we explicitly distinguish three major phases of adoption: introduction, growth and maturity. We combine this approach with an SP study to elicit individual preferences for conventional, hybrid and full electric vehicles. We apply a nes...
Article
In this paper we use data from an SP study on flood safety in the Netherlands, and elicit individual preferences for reduction of risk to life and limb. We perform context analysis to test the robustness of fatality risk valuation throughout choice experiments. The main interest of this paper is VOSL sensitivity to the valuation of correlated risks...
Article
This paper enriches existing valuation literature in a number of ways by presenting context-specific estimates of immaterial damage. First, it offers an estimation of value of statistical life (VOSL) in the context of a natural hazard (flooding). Next, as one of the contributions, alongside with less biased estimate of VOSL (euro 6.8 mln) it also p...

It seems that large-scale disasters are becoming an inevitable part of modern societies. Major calamities such as earthquakes, typhoons, and tsunamis are endangering the lives of many people and their possessions all over the world. Some of the most obvious questions to address are: How vulnerable are modern economies to extreme events? And: In whi...

In this paper we focus on the consequences of a major catastrophe for a modern economy, where 'major' means that a significant part of the economy's productive capacity is lost. In the aftermath of the catastrophe, authorities have to address a great number of issues. We show, using basic principles, that input-output methodology offers a flexible...
Chapter
The paper’s main concern is to establish a general methodology for economic loss estimation as a result of a large-scale flooding. The issue of economic loss definition is addressed in an attempt to unify the scattered definitions currently circulating in the ‘disaster’ literature. Total effect includes the direct loss to households and government,...

Protection from the threats posed by water in the Netherlands has a centuries old history. Remarkably, if one takes a historical prospective, it becomes apparent that water protection policy has not changed much through time. In fact, one may detect a certain “path dependency”. Today many experts agree that “technocratic” philosophy of raising dike...
Article
Input-output analysis (I-O) is increasingly used in studies of sudden catastrophes such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or, in the case of The Netherlands, major flooding. Unfortunately, in catastrophe analysis, there is no general consensus over the points of departure. Therefore, we need a basic notion of “where to start from”. One task the I-O model...

Question
Hi everyone,
I am wondering whether STATA already has a functionality to estimate latent class model for binary choice data. And further, latent class with class membership model. Which version of STATA should be used then?
