Introduction
My interest lies in neural correlates of attachment, trauma and emotionregulation over the lifespan, particularly in childhood and adolescence and how it impacts parenthood. We have used several MRI techniques to study this interest: fMRI, VBM, RSFC, DTI. Our current focus lies with unresolved-disorganized attachment and the general psychopathology factor and their differential relationship with brain structure and function. Other foci have been child abuse and neglect, IPV, covid

Adolescents with internalizing disorders and adolescents with childhood sexual abuse related post-traumatic stress disorder (CSA-related PTSD) show a large overlap in symptomatology. In addition, brain research indicated hyper-responsiveness and sustained activation instead of habituation of amygdala activation to emotional faces in both groups. Li...

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent, debilitating, and difficult to treat psychiatric disorder. Very little is known of how PTSD affects neuroplasticity in the developing adolescent brain. Whereas multiple lines of research implicate amygdala-centered network dysfunction in the pathophysiology of adult PTSD, no study has yet examine...

Although attachment representation is considered to be disturbed in traumatized adolescents, it is not known whether this is specific for trauma, as comparative studies with other clinical groups are lacking. Therefore, attachment representation was studied by means of the Adult Attachment Interview in adolescents with Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA)...

Childhood Sexual Abuse related posttraumatic stress disorder (CSA-related PTSD), and anxiety and depressive disorders (clinical depression) have profound though differential impact on adolescent emotion regulation, attention bias and emotional face processing. We hypothesized increased negative attention bias for emotional faces and altered brain f...

Most studies examining prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic are focused on psychopathology. However, mental health encompasses both absence of psychopathology and presence of well-being. This is the first study examining symptom profiles of early PGD and subjective mental well-being in 266 Dutch adults rece...

Due to the presumed high risk for prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is crucial to examine how grief develops over time in this population. This is the first study examining longitudinal symptom-profiles of PGD severity in people bereaved during the pandemic. We aimed to identify latent trajectories o...

Background: Most studies examining prolonged grief disorder (PGD) symptoms in people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic are focused on the presence or absence of psychopathology. Living away from family and having to adapt socially, academically, or even culturally, are major life changes for novice students, making them more vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic’s (social) restrictions.

The COVID‐19 pandemic has put health care workers (HCW) at risk for prolonged stress, exposure to potential traumatic events and thus for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms (Killikelly et al, 2021). Inspection of risk and resilience factors for PTSD can inform preventive policy for HCW. We (1) compared HCW's and non‐HCW's PTSD...

Objectives In simulation sessions using standardized patients (SPs), it is the instructors, rather than the learners, who traditionally identify the learning goals. We will describe and implement in real time co-constructive patient simulation (CCPS), an experiential method in which learners address self-identified goals. We will also introduce al...

This thesis describes a cross-sectional behavioral and neuroimaging study in a sample of n=85 adolescents with a history of childhood sexual abuse related PTSD (CSA-related PTSD), anxiety and/or depressive disorders or no psychiatric symptoms. We assessed attachment representation as well as psychopathological symptoms, attentional bias and emotion...

Loss and abuse in children can lead to unresolved-disorganized (UD) attachment. How this condition relates to brain structure and functional connectivity (FC) is unknown. We therefore aimed to investigate gray matter volume (GMV) and resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) correlates of UD attachment in adolescents. Based on previous neuroimag...

Unresolved–disorganized attachment (Ud) is another transdiagnostic risk factor that may be relevant to explain differences in patient characteristics within diagnostic classifications. Objective:...

Background: A dimensional approach of psychopathology focuses on features and risk factors that are shared across diagnoses. In support for this dimensional approach, studies point to a general psychopathology factor (GPF) associated with risk for multiple psychiatric disorders. It is, however, unknown how GPF relates to white matter integrity (WMI...

BACKGROUND Growing concern about how the neglect and abuse of children can be tackled and prevented has led to increased interest in the parent-child relationship and the concept of attachment. It is vitally important that the diagnostics relating to attachment are accurate. One of the main problems is that up till now the parent-child relationship...

Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) substantially increase the risk of later psychiatric and somatic pathology.
