The recent emergence of a multidrug-resistant yeast, Candida auris, has drawn attention to the closely related species from the Candida haemulonii complex that include C. haemulonii, Candida duobushaemulonii, Candida pseudohaemulonii, and the recently identified Candida vulturna. Here, we used antifungal susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequ...

Purpose of Review The purpose of this review is to contribute to the knowledge about the existence of Candida auris as an emerging pathogenic fungus, multi-resistant to antifungal, and causing health care-associated infections (HCAI). Recent Findings C. auris emerges as yeast with clonal transmission resistance to three families of commonly used a...

Purpose of Review The purpose of this review is to provide a current view of the importance of the determination and use of epidemiological cutoff values (ECVs) for Cryptococcus neoformans, since there are no clinical breakpoints (CBPs). Recent Findings ECVs have been proposed for some antifungal agents and C. neoformans, using standardized method...

Abstract: Histoplasmosis is a disease produced by Histoplasma capsulatum which mainly affects immunosuppressed patients, especially those with AIDS. The aim of this study was to compare culture and nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) diagnosis in 35 bone marrow specimens, from patients with AIDS and presumptive clinical diagnosis of disseminate...

The superficial mycoses are very common infectious diseases and therefore are a frequent reason for medical consultation. The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic frequency of superficial mycoses in the Mycology Department of the Instituto Nacional de Higiene "Rafael Rangel" during 14 years (2001-2014). A retrospective cross-sectional...

The aim of this study was to determine in vitro susceptibility profiles of Venezuelan strains of Candida spp. to four antifungal agents. One hundred and forty five (145) isolates were recovered during a 1-year period (June 2006 to June 2007) from clinical specimens of patients with severe Candida spp. infections in 15 hospitals. In vitro susceptibi...

Cryptococcus neoformans is one of the medically important yeast-like fungi. C. neoformans var. gatti has been made a species: C. gatti. In our country, there are few studies about these two species and their serotypes. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of C. neoformans and C. gattii, and their serotypes in Venezuelan clinical...

The pathogenesis in cryptococosis is associated to multiple virulence factors of which capsule and melanin production are the most important. The polysacaride capsule has a high amount of glucuronoxylomannan (GXN) which impedes phagocytosis, migration of leucocytes and suppresses T-linfocytes proliferation. Melanin blocks the production of tumoral...

Histoplasmosis is a granulomatous systemic disease of worldwide distribution, caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. The most important endemic areas of this mycosis surround the American continent, because of its propitious climatic conditions for the development of this fungus. The illness has close relationship with professional...

Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection of subacute or chronic course caused by an opportunistic yeast from genus Cryptococcus, mainly by species of the C. neoformans (CNC) and C. gattii (CGC) complexes. Cryptococcosis tends to position itself as one of the first opportunistic infections associated with AIDS, with a high rate of morbidity in these patients who often develop meningoencephalitis. In Venezuela, information on the serotypes, antifungal susceptibility, and virulence of circulating strains is scarce. The aim of this study was to perform the molecular characterization of Venezuelan isolates from the C. neoformans and C. gattii complexes by PCR-RFLP (Amplification of URA5 gene and subsequent digestion with the restriction enzymes Sau96I and HhaI). This study will provides epidemiological information on circulating molecular types and will allows deeper understanding of this opportunistic fungal infection in Venezuela
