Introduction
The main goal of my research line is to elucidate the role of environmental variables on the reproductive physiology of marine fishes and thus understand and predict changes in their reproductive patterns as response to the environmental variations driven by climate variability and change.

Environmental conditions have a significant influence on the physiological processes that regulate the reproduction of fish. However, there is less information on this subject for chondrichthyans, and particularly for males. This study describes the spermatogenic cycle of the narrownose smooth hound shark Mustelus schmitti related to sex steroid pl...
This study analyzed the inter-annual variability in the reproductive dynamics of the Argentine hake from Patagonian waters during the last 20 years concerning the environmental conditions and the nutritional status of females. Macroscopic and histological information on gonadal maturity, female condition factor (K), and oceanographic data at differ...
The narrow coastal waters south of the Río de la Plata estuary are an oceanographically dynamic area where small-scale or artisanal fisheries occur. We analyzed 95 fishing bottom trawls from research surveys, along with oceanographic data collected during 2016 and 2017. Multivariate analyses (PERMANOVA, SIMPER, CAP) were applied to determine the sp...
Understanding the reproductive biology of Antarctic notothenioid fish species is crucial for effective management and conservation efforts. This study investigates the reproductive biology of Notothenia coriiceps, focusing on the location of spawning grounds and the influence of environmental factors on this process. Sampling included 120 specimens...
Bioenergetic models are tools that allow the evaluation of the effect of environmental variables on fish growth. Successful implementation of this approach has been achieved in a few elasmobranch species. Our objective was to develop a bioenergetic model for Mustelus schmitti. The model developed showed a good fit to the field data available and ac...
Aquaculture offers solutions to meet the growing global demand for fish, and reports from the UN-FAO indicate that aquaculture production in Latin America (LA) has grown at rates above the world average in recent years. One of the major constraints
in the diversification of LA aquaculture is the control of reproduction in several popular native fis...
Caracterización del ensamble de peces costeros y su relación con el régimen oceanográfico en el litoral norte del Ecosistema Costero Bonaerense (36°-37° S)
The spatio-temporal delimitation of fish reproduction is essential for the appropriate management and conservation strategies in populations. Assessing this feature in Antarctic Ichthyology is particularly difficult because harsh environmental conditions limit sample collection. This study shows how physiology can contribute compelling evidence to...
The detailed knowledge of temperature variation patterns in marine ecosystems is important to understand marine communities' dynamics. The present study modeled the historical (1980–2016) daily bottom temperatures on a shallow marine ecosystem of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (El Rincón), which is a reproductive ground for several commercially im...
The knowledge of how temperature influences elasmobranchs reproductive physiology allows a better understanding of their reproductive patterns. This study describes the relationship between temperature fluctuations and the plasmatic changes of the sex steroids related to reproduction: testosterone (T), estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4), througho...
In the present study, we determined the hepatopancratic shbg transcript abundance and ovarian immunoreactive Shbg (ir-Shbg) localization in pejerrey females at different gonadal stages during an annual ovarian cycle. In the hepatopancreas, shbg expression remains was constant in pre-vitellogenic stages, decreased at final vitellogenesis to increase...
The aim of this study was to characterize occurrence of extreme temperature and depth conditions affecting fish community in a shallow lake as result of local climate variability, in turn influenced by the ENSO and PDO phenomena. Extreme depth and water temperature events (modeled from local weather conditions) were characterized from 1966 to 2012...
In vertebrates, the reproduction is controlled by the brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis and kisspeptin has emerged as a key player of this axis. In this study, we analyzed changes in the expression levels of kiss1, kiss2, and their receptors, kissr2 and kissr3 during gametogenesis in the BPG axis of feral Odontesthes bonariensis. In females, level...
Knowledge of environmental influence on reproductive dynamics in chondrichthyans is critical for effective management. The present study assessed the potential influences of temperature and depth on aggregations and reproductive events of the narrownose smooth-hound shark (Mustelus schmitti), using an analysis criterion based on the co-occurrence o...
It is well known that water temperature
directly affects fish reproduction. The aim of this study
was to develop a predictive model to determine water
temperature conditions on a typical Pampas shallow lake
(Chascomu´s, 35360S, 58020W) from local climate
variables (specifically air temperature and rainfall). In
addition, this model was used to as...
The aim of this work was to assess the quality of pejerrey eggs and larvae throughout its spawning season. Fertilized eggs were taken on September, October, November, and December from a captive broodstock. The egg diameter, yolk diameter, and oil droplets area decreased along the spawning season, with higher values in September. Fertilization and...
The goal of this study was to evaluate the essential components controlling the brain-pituitary-gonad axis during pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) oogenesis in the wild. Ovarian developmental stages from vitellogenesis up to ovulation were associated with increasing daylength and water temperatures below to 21ºC (winter and beginning of spring)....
It has been traditionally accepted that the gonadotropins (GtHs), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), are synthesized and secreted only by the pituitary. However, the presence of theses hormones in extrapituitary tissues has been demonstrated in mammals, and more recently also in fish. In this study, we cloned the cDNAs...
The pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis, is being considered for aquaculture due to its high demand and market price. Reproduction and larviculture studies have demonstrated the feasibility of massive fingerling production, and techniques that prolong life and increase gamete viability can assist in the culture development of this species. In this re...
