This proposal is part of an ongoing diachronic research on 'ter' and 'haver'(‘have’) in Portuguese, focusing in particular on the emergence of deontic constructions with 'ter'. In this article I analyze data retrieved from a diachronic corpus and discuss the chronology and conditioning factors of the changes involved in both the disuse of 'ser teud...
In Portuguese past stages, both simple pluperfect (MPS) and conditional (COND) forms occurred in the apodosis of conditional constructions. In this study I investigate the ‘competition’ (cf., a.o., Berg, 2014), in the mentioned constructions, of these two verbal paradigms, in data retrieved from late 15th to early 17th century’s textual sources. In...
This paper deals with extant written records from Portuguese past stages (Medieval period) that are explored as sources for linguistic diachronic studies. Its objective is to argue that, complementarily to the retrieving of data from (smaller or larger) text corpora, the close analysis of an individual «witness» (as opposed to the somewhat vague co...
In Contemporary Portuguese, verbs such as considerar ‘consider’ and entender ‘understand’ contrast in more ‘lexical’ uses, contrarily to uses where epistemic values emerge, in the sense that there is a linguistic expression of subjective assessment of what is expressed. This paper aims at investigating the factors which diachronically determined th...
For the expression of aspectual values, with verbs like estar ('be' < Latin STARE 'stand') and andar ('walk' < Latin AMBULARE), the European and Brazilian varieties of Portuguese contrast in using periphrases with a + infinitive / gerund. Diachronically, the Brazilian alternative is more conservative, corresponding to the type of construction large...
In this presentation some changes that occurred in Medieval Portuguese, in the transition from the Old to the Middle periods, are analyzed. The main objective is to discuss aspects concerning the typological characterization of these changes. Considering that they all have consequences on inflection but were apparently conditioned by different type...
Although in Contemporary Portuguese the use of the simple pluperfect is confined to written registers, the large number of attestations found in diachronic data seems to indicate that in earlier periods this verb form was commonly used. My main objective is to present a contribution for a more complete and coherent approach of the development of th...
This chapter discusses the linguistic features characteristic of the most ancient periods of Portuguese, signaling the most relevant differences within the Romance context, in particular those that are distinctive to the Ibero-Romance area, for which people take Castilian as their point of reference. It proposes a distinction between two medieval p...
This chapter describes some instances of grammaticalization processes that occurred in the history of Portuguese focusing mainly on the principles of persistence and decategorialization. The persistence principle allows people to assume that some original meanings will tend to survive in the new grammaticalized form. According to the principle of d...
This paper focuses on the study of a particular construction-haver 'have' (simple pluperfect) de (preposition) + infinitive-in two Portuguese texts dating from late 15 th century. Since it combines values inherent to the pluperfect-past in the past-and to haver de-posteriority-the construction has a value of a 'future in the past'. Part of the atte...
In contemporary Portuguese the use of the simple pluperfect is quite limited, and it is usually described as being confined to more formal styles. But the analysis of extant written records from earlier periods seems to show a more frequent and less restricted use of this verb form, and also that it could express, in different contexts, not only te...
