Introduction
Teaching and translating Professional English since the onset of my career, especially in the areas of law and economy. I have coordinated numerous postgraduate courses, both at international (IIT, Chicago; Brooklyn Law School, New York) and Spanish Universities. These last ten years my research has revolved around the economic and legal lexicon of the Global Systemic Crisis, the translation of corruption crimes and the contrastive study of gender violence legislation in the Common Law and Continental traditions. Of late I am exploring new avenues: the presence of power in the discourse of specialised professions and how emotions and sentiment are latent in the language of the law.

The persuasive or manipulative contrivances that are deployed linguistically are very subtle and may be ‘uncovered‘ when genres are studied or translated from a critical standpoint. But because Critical Genre Studies are only at their inception stages (Bhatia, 2008 and 2010; Orts, 2015), such an uncovering −through the analysis and deconstruction of the genre− is seldom produced, only ‘flat’ interpretations and translations being achieved of those, as their true meaning remains concealed. The present project is aimed at bringing forth studies in the language of professions −law, economics, marketing and advertising, business, politics, education and the media−, the emphasis being made on the deployment of power in these specialized communities through the analysis and scrutiny of the communicative devices that serve their need for power, persuasion and control. Aided not only by CL and CDA studies, but also by other theoretical frameworks such as applied linguistics, traditional discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, forensic linguistics and translation, a study of the manipulative devices deployed by professional communities may reveal the actual communicative purposes behind their genres, preventing such ‘flat’ interpretations in their application and deployment.
