Introduction
My research is related to mitigate agricultural source nutrient losses and understanding of processes introducing variation in riverine nutrient loads. I am also interested in cold climate (e.g. frost, river-ice, snow melt) influences on river water quality. My recent research topics have been related to intra- and inter-annual variation of turbidity, suspended solids, nitrogen and COD levels in river water. I also participate to the project of University of Eastern Finland where ice thickness and frazil ice formation are measured with a shallow water ice profiler (SWIP) in Finland. Methods: high-frequency river water quality monitoring (s::can), HEC-RAS, SAS, SPSS, ADCP, ground penetrating radar (GPR)

Climate change in combination with land use alterations may lead to significant changes in soil erosion and sediment fluxes in streams. Optical turbidity sensors can monitor with high frequency and can be used as a proxy for suspended sediment concentration (SSC) provided there is an acceptable calibration curve for turbidity measured by sensors an...

The 21st century has brought new challenges and opportunities and has also increased demands on the Nordic hydrological community. Our hydrological science focus and approaches need rethinking and adaptation to the changing requirements of society in response to climate change and human interventions, in search of more comprehensive and cross-disci...

Macro-turbulent flows (i.e., coherent flow structures reaching through the whole water column), have not been studied widely in northern seasonally frozen rivers during both open-channel and ice-covered flow conditions. Thus, we aim: (1) to detect and compare the macro-turbulent flow, both at open-channel and ice-covered flow conditions; (2) to exp...
Article
There exist numerous ecotechnologies for recovery and reuse of carbon and nutrients from various waste streams before they are lost to runoff. However, it remains largely unknown how growing implementation of such ecotechnologies affect nutrient emissions to surface waters at catchment scale. Here, this knowledge gap is addressed by application of...

In situ high-frequency measured turbidity can potentially be used as a surrogate for riverine phosphorus (P) concentrations to better justify the effectiveness of nutrient loss mitigation measures at agricultural sites. We explore the possibilities of using turbidity as a surrogate for total phosphorus (TP) and particulate phosphorus (PP) in four s...

Predicting the future changes in river ice development and impacts on seasonal sediment transport requires more in-depth examination of present river ice cover growth processes. This paper therefore investigates: (1) the impacts of hydro-climatically varying years on river ice development in a Scandinavian subarctic meandering river and (2) the acc...

Anyone clicking on this link https://authors.elsevier.com/a/1YRjx1Dk5AL75U before March 14, 2019 will be taken directly to the final version of the article on ScienceDirect, which they are welcome to read or download. Highlights • Overall the N load simulation was better in the larger than the smaller catchment. • Snowmelt flow-weighted mean NO3-...
Article
For being able to understand year‐round river channel evolution both at present and in the future, the spatial variation of the flow characteristics and their sediment transport capabilities under ice cover need to be detected. As the measurements done through cross‐sectional drill holes cover only a small portion of the river channel area, the num...
Thesis
This dissertation examines impacts of varying hydrological conditions and river ice-covered season on riverbed erosion potential, river water turbidity, dissolved nitrogen and organic carbon concentrations. The results based on long-term monitoring and numerical modelling show that smooth river-ice cover decreases the turbidity level during baseflo...
Article
Potential influences of climate change on water quality, riverine suspended sediments, nitrogen and organic matter loads in temporally frozen rivers, which have ice-covered flow and snow-affected basins, are poorly understood. However, before being able to understand potential future changes, the impact of ice and snow needs to be investigated more...
Article
The spatial variation of river -ice thickness in three contiguous meandering bends was determined via ground penetrating radar technology and traditional borehole measurements. Applying high -frequency GPR enables detailed surveying of the variation in river -Ice thickness and the boundary of floating and grounded (i.e., bottom fast) ice in a relat...
Article
The effects of ice cover on flow characteristics in meandering rivers are still not completely understood. Here, we quantify the effects of ice cover on flow velocity, the vertical and spatial flow distribution, and helical flow structure. Comparison to open-channel low flow conditions is performed. The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) is u...
Conference Paper
The river ice cover periods have been indicated to shorten in Northern regions due to the warming climate. However, the river ice cover influence on water quality has not been thoroughly studied. Potential changes e.g. in turbidity and sediment loads may take place due to shortening ice cover duration and smoother discharge especially during freshe...

To date there has been no evaluation of the capabilities of the Baltic Sea ecosys- tem models to provide information as outlined by the Marine Strategy Frame- work Directive. This work aims to fill in this knowledge gap by exploring the modelling potential of nine Baltic Sea ecosystem models to support this specific European policy and, in particul...

The European Union's Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) seeks to achieve, for all European seas, " Good Environmental Status " (GEnS), by 2020. Ecological models are currently one of the strongest approaches used to predicting and understanding the consequences of anthropogenic and climate-driven changes in the natural environment. We asses...
Article
A large number of rivers are frozen annually and the river ice cover has an influence on the geomorphological processes. These processes in cohesive sediment rivers are not fully understood. Therefore, this paper demonstrates the impact of river ice cover on sediment transport, i.e. turbidity, suspended sediment loads and erosion potential, compare...
Technical Report
Full-text available
The purpose of this report is to review the current capabilities of the modelling community to inform on indicators outlined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), for biodiversity (D1), and food webs (D4) and, where possible, also non-indigenous species (D2) and seafloor integrity (D6). Where models are available to the DEVOTES projec...

The drift and spreading of the Runner 4 oil spill in the ice-covered Gulf of Finland is analysed. The oil spill was caused by the sinking of the Dominican-registered cargo ship Runner 4 on 5 March 2006, after collision with the Malta-registered cargo ship Svjatoi Apostol Andrey. This oil spill was very difficult to detect in the first week due to s...
Article
This paper is devoted to the validation of water level forecasts in the Gulf of Finland. Daily forecasts produced by four setups of operational, three-dimensional Baltic Sea oceanographic models are analyzed using statistical means and are compared with water level observations at three Finnish stations located on the northern coast of the Gulf of...

The drift of the oil spills due to the sink of the Dominica-flagged cargo ship Runner 4 on 5 March 2006 in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea is analyzed along with the corresponding weather and ice conditions. A numerical sea ice model is employed to investigate the drift of sea ice. The preliminary comparison of the drift between the sea ice and the...
Article
The Gulf of Finland is an elongated estuary located in the north-eastern extremity of the Baltic Sea. This semi-enclosed sea-area is subject to heavy sea traffic, and is one of the main risk areas for oil accidents in the Baltic. The continuous development and validation of operational particle drift and oil-spill forecasting systems is thus seen t...

A fully operational and user-friendly oil spill forecast system was developed in cooperation among the Baltic Sea countries. The system is called Seatrack Web, and it is applied to the whole of the Baltic Sea including Kattegat and Skagerrak. At present, the operational Seatrack Web System includes several models, i.e., an atmospheric, a hydrodynam...
