PHOENIX aims to provide answers to a set of issues triggered by the sustainability of retail-led regeneration initiatives promoted by new forms of urban governance widespread in European cities. Through a socio-critical perspective, a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods and a set of case studies, in the form of Urban Linving Labs, the project aims: i) to assess the potential of retail-led urban regeneration schemes for the economic and social revitalization of urban districts affected by the impacts of de-industrialization and the decentralization of retailing; ii) to identify the conditions that must be present in cities to ensure these initiatives can foster the resilience of commercial systems, increase urban liveability and contribute to the development of local vibrant communities; iii) to develop analytical tools to support the decision-making of public authorities and other relevant stakeholders involved in the implementation of retail-led urban regeneration projects.
