Introduction
My main research is focused on bioactive compounds from agro-food products (Madeira wine, beer, fruits and flour) using analytical methodologies.
The main techniques used are HPLC-DAD-RI-FLD and UV-Vis Spectrophotometry for the identification and quantification of compounds such as polyphenols, amino acids and biogenic amines, sugars, alcohols and organic acids.
Currently, i am working for the project IMPACT III - Technology Impact on Wine Quality (M142001-0247-FEDER-000024).

Blueberries have a well-deserved reputation as a potential functional food, supported by studies which have identified and quantified various nutrients and bioactive phytochemicals with known benefits for human diet and health. Wild blueberries have attracted particular attention due to the levels and concentrations of those phytonutrients. This st...
Laurobasidium lauri, commonly known as Madre de Louro, is a parasitic fungus of Laurus trees which has a large use in local folk medicine, usually as an alcoholic tincture [1]. In this study, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of several extracts of Madre de Louro were evaluated and enzymatic studies were performed using in-vitro assays [...
The present study aims to analyse the evolution of colour and browning of fortified wines submitted to oak and accelerated ageing induced by temperature, both traditional ageing processes of Madeira wines. These wines were followed during the first 2 years of ageing and were simultaneously compared to aged reference samples, in order to disclose if...
The potential bioactivity of dietary and medicinal endemic Helichrysum plants from Madeira Archipelago was explored, for the first time, in order to supply new information for the general consumer. In vitro antioxidant properties were investigated using DPPH, ABTS•+, FRAP and β-Carotene assays, and the total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavono...
Madeira wine vinification process has been mostly empiric and requiring further studies. The present paper
describes the existing pilot plant facility in Madeira University, with the installed controlled systems and safety devices. An advanced multi-parameter platform for real time monitoring and interactive data visualization is described and its...
