The treatment of agricultural waste plays an important role in the sustainability of agricultural production and the well-being of rural communities. The present study analyzes the existing sources of agricultural waste in rural communities, their current disposal, and the farmers’ attitudes towards waste management. The data is based on a survey i...
Esimerkki tällaista lähestymistapaa hyödyntävästä ratkaisusta on pääosin yksityiseen rahoitukseen perustuva yhdysvaltalainen Forest Bank...
Key message
Multi-objective forest planning methods were used to assess the trade-offs between three ecosystem services: timber production, erosion protection and biodiversity. The use of trade-off analysis helps to define proper weights for the management objectives and evaluate the feasibility of obtaining economic profit from timber while contro...
Wood biomass for energy is largely produced in Europe from forest land resulting from silvicultural and management practices or from agricultural land in the form of fast growing plantations. The present paper reviews and compares the estimated current potentials for wood biomass production in 25 countries in Europe. The potentials are divided atte...
Gully erosion is an important land degradation process affecting soils around the world. This paper studies gully erosion in forest lands, analysing related local and environmental factors influencing its occurrence in Catalonia (north-east Spain). The data on gully erosion are based on observations from the Third Spanish National Forest Inventory,...

The distribution of the wood pellet plants in Europe was analysed using a geo-statistical kernel based approach, in order to identify and define cluster-regions with high concentration of pellet production capacity. For that, a database with the location of pellet plants, as well as its capacity,...
This study aims at identifying forest areas affected by surface erosion in Catalonia. It analyses the characteristics of forests that are related to erosion occurrence. The data on erosion observations and stand variables were obtained from the Third Spanish National Forest Inventory (2000–2001). We used the classification tree method to study the...
We studied the resistance of nature to trampling and path erosion in Koli National Park. The data are based on 201 field measurements of paths together with digital datasets in order to identify the main factors affecting path erosion. Additionally, the resistance of different forest types to trampling was studied. Models for path erosion were cons...
Wood pellets have become an important fuel in heat and power production. The pellet market and supply structures are currently undergoing rapid development. Ensuring the quality of pellets through the whole production, delivery and handling chain is important in order to increase the use of pellets and sustain its ability to compete with other fuel...

Projects (2)
The general aim of the proposed project is to enhance the sustainable production of wood biomass, interlinking current research efforts started in partnering Nordic and Baltic countries. Three main goals are considered: i) identify and assess the main environmental effects of the intensified use of biomass resources in the Nordic area, ii) evaluate and propose alternatives that can align the co-production of biomass production to complementary ES and iii) seek ways to fully implement
nd realize the resulting strategies and alternatives in existing biomass
production practices and supply chains. These aims build on existing research and datasets among the partner institutions, and involve creation and sharing of experiences and knowledge, research results and existing data and trials concerning biomass production systems
long the Nordic area, as the basis of further developing current and
future research efforts.
The main objective of our project is to co-develop with land use planners and decision-makers a transdisciplinary working model which optimizes the standardized C reduction impacts of wind energy, forest management and peatland rewetting while taking into account also biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) effects and public acceptance.
