Nulliparous women are more at risk of morbidity from dystocia and cephalo-pelvic disproportion, especially in healthy and economically low-resource countries. External pelvic measurements have renewed interest from African and Asian authors, recognizing the prominent role of Michaelis sacral area's (Msa) transverse diameter (Td). Labor and delivery...

Background. The size and mobility of the maternal pelvic space are fundamental factors in successful childbirth and can allow operators to screen for dystocia. This pilot study including a group of 70 pregnant women aimed to test whether the external dynamic pelvimetry test can be used to predict the likelihood of obstructed labor. Methodology. The...

1- The 2D ultrasound can evaluate the sub-pubic arch angle in two different hip flexion degrees supine positions. 2- Is the sub-pubic arch angle correlated to the external pelvic diameters in supine patients shifting leg positions? 3- The postural changes of the Michaelis sacral area, not the static standing measures, are related to the operative d...

Women and babies worldwide suffer from the complication of labor dystocia and operative deliveries. The "contracted pelvis" is the absence of pelvic mobility, which leads to fetal-pelvic disproportion, obstructed labor, and operative delivery. Dystocia in labor is still a clinical challenge, and a screening test is lacking. Maternal pelvis biomecha...

The sub-pubic arch angle (SPAA) evaluated with sonography has shown to be a predictor of the risk of dystocia in labor and, consequently, the anal sphincter trauma and incontinence after delivery. SPAA was correlated with the amplitude of the pelvic inlet's anteroposterior diameter and the pelvic midlet's transverse diameter. Childbirth is a dynami...

Dystocia in labor is still a clinical challenge. The "contracted pelvis" is the absence of pelvic mobility, which leads to fetal-pelvic disproportion, obstructed labor, and operative delivery. Maternal pelvis biomechanics studies by high technological techniques have shown that maternal shifting positions during pregnancy and labor can create more...

Pelvic mobility is the cornerstone of an adequate birth canal for safe childbirth, and midwives invite pregnant women to assume loading positions to facilitate delivery. Biomechanics asserts that pelvic space changes in shifting positions from erect to the squat position. The current standard practice in obstetrics and osteopathy provides a qualita...

Introduction Dystocia is still one of the major causes of complicated delivery and maternal and neonatal morbidity [1,2]. Among the causes of dystocia, the most difficult to predict and prevent is the so-called "contracted pelvis" which does not allow the commitment of the part presented within the pelvic excavation or prevents its progression with...

The shape of Michaelis's sacral rhomboid area changes shape as the postural position changes. Two methods of measuring its diameters are compared. In the present study, the method of measurement of the marks on the skin and the method of measurement with direct contact of the operator's fingers on the bone landmarks were used. The BMK (Metrica, Mil...

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in internal and external pelvimetry, in relation to the diagnosis of dystocia from a "contracted pelvis." Dystocia is still one of the causes of maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality in the world. The main cause is the fetalpelvic disproportion, of which mechanical dystocia and contracted pelvis a...

The ischioanal fossa is also referred to as the ischiorectal fossa in some anatomy textbooks. The ischioanal fossa is a space filled with fat lateral to the anal canal and just below the pelvic diaphragm. The ischioanal fossa has a shape of a triangular pyramid with the apex at the boundary of the anal canal and the obturators fascia and the base d...

The perineal body (PB), also referred to as the central tendon of the perineum is a fibro-muscular structure located in the midline of the perineum. It is located in the midline of the perineum at the junction of the anus and urogenital triangle in both females and males. In males, it is located between the anus and bulb of the penis, whereas in fe...

The psoas muscle is among the most significant muscles that overlie the vertebral column. It is a long fusiform muscle on either side of the vertebral column and the brim of the lesser pelvis. At its distal end, it combines with the iliacus muscle to form the iliopsoas muscle. The psoas major muscle has a biomechanical and postural function during...

The pelvis is an anatomical structure in dynamic equilibrium, capable of movement in space, within which the internal organs and vascular, nervous, and visceral structures can dwell and perform their function without interference. The pelvic inlet is the anatomical limit between the true pelvis below and the false pelvis above. There are tangible, genetic and hormonal differences between the male and female pelvis related to the reproductive function. In obstetrics, the pelvic inlet is the entrance door toward the birth canal. The shape of the inlet depends on the general s...

Background: Amniotic fluid volume (AFV) is a vital sign of fetal well-being. Maternal plasma volume expansion has been demonstrated to have a role in relieving oligohydramnios. Maternal venous fluid infusion, maternal hydration and maternal water immersion can influence both maternal plasma volume and amniotic fluid volume. A previous study showed...

Background. Preeclampsia has been associated with maternal haemodynamic dysfunction and hypolumbarlordosis. These conditions are matched with lumbar spine stiffness, which can be treated with vertebral manipulations. It has been shown that vertebral manipulations have an effect on the autonomous nervous system and on vasomotor arterial tone. The ve...

Project
The project is intended to evaluate from an osteopathic point of view the maternal physiology during pre-conception status and during pregnancy. Maternal health is the primal environment in which the human being grows and develops. The osteopathic physiology takes mainly into consideration the lymphatic and blood flows, the fascial system, the fluid-tissue interchanges. We explore the vascular pelvic regulation, the amniotic fluid physiology, the gynaecological clinic, the obstetrics needs.
Project
The obstructed labour is one of the main obstetric causes of maternal and foetal damages. The contracted pelvis is difficult in diagnosis. Pelvimetry made by RM is not wider used. We are studying a tool and a method to evaluate clinically the changing pelvic diameters in changing maternal pelvic postures.
