Introduction
I'm interested in applying mathematical modeling together with computational techniques to simulate and model chemical processes.
I've worked with Thermodynamics during my Masters, in the field of Gibbs energy minimization (GEM) and chemical equilibria, which resulted in new methodology for doing GEM.
Nowadays I mostly work with process modeling and simulation, developing computational tools, such as simulators, to help engineers and process operators make better decisions.

The cement industry is one of the sectors responsible for the highest carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of the world. CO2 capture technologies for storage and/or utilization are pointed out as the most relevant alternatives for significant greenhouse gases mitigation. Among CO2 capture technologies, oxy-fuel combustion has stood out due to its greater...
Nesta metodologia o...
In this paper, a novel methodology based on process superstructures is described that enables structure and heat-transfer areas to be simultaneously considered in optimization without having to resort to any previously selected arrangements. This methodology is applied to an industrial evaporator case study of simultaneously sizing and determining...
An equation-oriented process simulator was developed for simulating evaporation plants. The simulator graphical user interface was written in Python 2.7, and its engine, in C++. The simulator orders and partitions the system of equations that describe the evaporator system under study and solves the partitions sequentially using the Newton-Raphson...

The design optimization of shell-and-tube heat exchangers
(STHEs) is studied. Impact of using standard lengths and shell
diameters is investigated, and two types of cost function are
compared: a simple area-based correlation typically used in
STHE optimization studies, and a more detailed one. Special emphasis is placed on selecting the decision va...

In this paper, a modified version of the well-known branch-and-bound algorithm, αBB, as well as an underestimator-independent branch-and-bound method have been applied to determine the chemical and phase equilibrium conditions of isothermal and isobaric systems by means of Gibbs energy minimization. The original αBB algorithm mathematically guarant...
Chemical and phase equilibrium calculations are commonly performed by solving a constrained optimization problem known as Gibbs energy minimization. This problem is, in general, nonconvex, which implies that it is not a trivial task to solve for its global minimum, as many local minima may exist. The global minimum is the only solution that bears p...

Domestic sewage treatment experiments were conducted in trickling filters in laboratory pilot plants in which the peeled dehydrated fruits of Luffa cyllindrica were used as a support medium for microbiological growth, in order to verify its capacity to remove organic matter, measured in terms of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5, 20) and Chemical Oxy...
The aim of this work was to study the removal of three pesticides using conventional drinking water treatment (DWT) processes. These methods are the most used in Brazil, and include coagulation–flocculation of water. The pesticides/metabolites evaluated were: endosulfan, ethylenethiourea (ETU), and 1,2,4-triazole. The laboratory tests were carried...

The excessive amount of pesticides applied in agricultural areas may reach surface water, thereby contaminating it. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of pesticides used in a sub-basin headwater with coffee crops, situated in the Dom Corrêa district, Manhuaçu, Minas Gerais. The region of study is a great producer o...
A study was conducted in Manhuaçu city, Minas Gerais, aiming to study the effects of pesticides used in coffee crops on surface and ground waters. Manhuaçu is located in an important Brazilian region of agricultural production. Moreover, the city possesses many different water sources directed to the public water supply, and 13 points of surface an...
