Research literature on the role of mathematics teachers during the COVID-19 crisis shows that teacher preparation for emergency situations is required. In reporting on this exploratory study, we present and analyse lesson plans created by seven future teachers for mathematics classes during the pandemic. Data were collected between April and Octobe...
After about two years of emergency remote teaching during the pandemic, the teaching of mathematics is slowly returning to (what used to be called) normal . However, after the period of mostly teaching online, there is uncertainty about the extent to which we will return to the way we were teaching before. In this survey paper we attempt to give so...
The global COVID-19 pandemic has provided an opportunity to re-examine the possibility of organising virtual conferences in mathematics education, in which the social needs of participants can also be addressed. This poster aims to present the role played by the software GeoGebra in an activity
which the goal was to try an approach to teaching the notion of sequence convergence,
more specifically to understand the relationship between 𝜖 and 𝑛! in the definition of
numerical sequences. We use an experimental approach, in which some non-deductive
methods are...

In this chapter we discuss how the Internet is interacting with mathematics education. After briefly discussing the rise of the Internet and its impact on education, we suggest that it has the potential to disrupt mathematics teaching and learning. Moving far beyond its used as a data resource, we suggest the Internet will provide on-demand access...
This paper begins by situating online mathematics education in Brazil within the context of research on digital technology over the past 25 years. I argue that Brazilian research on technology in mathematics education can be divided into four phases, and then present an example that “blends” aspects of the second and third phases. Phase two can be...
Online mathematics teacher education is characterized as an emergent area of research in mathematics education. We identify some key topics that require further research: communities and networks of teachers in online environments; sustainability of these communities and kinds of organizational structures; knowledge-building practices in technology...
In this paper, we analyze the reading and the interpretation of "ready data". We consider ready-data the information collected from the Internet, such as graphs or a mathematical formulas, without explanation of how they were generated. With this idea in mind, we re-think the mosaic of the research carried out by our research group, GPIMEM. This gr...
In this paper we present a pedagogical strategy developed to work with students of a Calculus discipline for a Biology course at UNESP, State University of São Paulo, Brazil. This proposal involves two trends in mathematics education: modeling and technology. We use computer technology to present students since day one of the course with issues reg...
This paper begins by situating online mathe-matics education in Brazil within the context of research on digital technology over the past 25 years. I argue that Brazilian research on technology in mathematics education can be divided into four phases, and then present an example that ''blends'' aspects of the second and third phases. The questions, whether mathematical modelling can be learnt and what we know from empirical research, are highly relevant
not only for the current research on modelling, but they are as well essential for curricular changes introducing modelling
into schools. Werner Blum tackles these questions in his paper from several perspectives and shows impor...
Mathematics education in Brazil, if we consider what one may call the scientific phase, is about 30 years old. The papers for this special issue focus mainly on this
period. During these years, many trends have emerged in mathematics education to address the complex problems facing Brazilian society. However, most Brazilian mathematics educators fe...
In this chapter we intend to show how we learned mathematics in the process of teaching teachers online how to use geometry
software in face-to-face classrooms. We emphasize that we need to be open to risks and being pushed beyond our “comfort zone”
if we want to use information and communication technology. In particular, we emphasize that the ris...
Research on the influence of multiple representations in mathematics education gained new momentum when personal computers
and software started to become available in the mid-1980s. It became much easier for students who were not fond of algebraic
representations to work with concepts such as function using graphs or tables. Research on how student...
The main aim of this study was to present evidence of the ways in which different media have conditioned and dramatically
reorganized education, in general, and mathematics education, in particular. After an introduction of the theme, we discuss
the epistemological perspective that provides the foundation for our analysis: the notion of humans-with...
The purpose of this chapter is to present a synthesis of the papers from Strand II which address the tools, dynamics, tasks,
contexts, and learning settings that can be mobilized for pre-service and in-service mathematics teacher education. Within
this focus, we have identified four topics around which our chapter is organized. In the first section...
What if we take the view, as an elementary school teacher once noted, that mathematics “can be discussed with your family and friends just like you would a favorite book or new movie”? (Gadanidis, forthcoming).
This chapter presents a collaborative experience between two neighbouring countries from South America: Argentina and Brazil.
Our purpose is to share a model of international collaboration that we consider to be an alternative to the classical movement
of early mathematical and scientific knowledge between East and West and between North and South....
In the new times of globalisation, international academic contacts and collaborations are ever increasing. They are taking many forms, from international conferences and publications, student and academic exchange cross cultural research projects, curriculum development to professional development activities and affect every aspect of academic life...
In this paper, we discuss some aspects of Mathematics education, seen as
a realm of inquiry, and we show how this field has strong ties both with
mathematics and with education, as well as other areas. We also aim to
illustrate through an example related to research regarding mathematics
distance education how Mathematics is transformed when di...
This paper presents some research findings regarding the changes in the mathematics produced by mathematics teachers in on-line distance courses. Predicated on the belief that knowledge is generated by collectives of humans-with- media, and that different technologies modify the nature of the knowledge generated, we have sought to understand how th...
This book offers a new conceptual framework for reflecting on the role of information and communication technology in mathematics education. Borba and Villarreal provide examples from research conducted at the level of basic and university-level education, developed by their research group based in Brazil, and discuss their findings in the light of...
