Introduction
Learning Analytics supported Learning Design especially instrumentalized by FoLA^2 (Fellowship of Learning Activities and Analytics) Board/Cardgame. All other T.E.L. research keeps me interested especially if it is within the Data Intelligence (Zuyd) or Online Learning and Instruction (OU) area. Every connection to Gaming Research I can make will be made. Most research fits into Design Based Research. At the moment Hevner's work is the inspiration for all things I do within this area.

Learning activities are at the core of every educational design effort. Designing learning activities is a process that benefits from reflecting on previous runs of those activities. One way to measure the behaviour and effects of design choices is to use learning analytics (LA). The challenge, however, lies in the unavailability of an easy-to-use,...

Collaboration is one of the four important 21st-century skills. With the pervasive use of sensors, interest on co-located collaboration (CC) has increased lately. Most related literature used the audio modality to detect indicators of collaboration (such as total speaking time and turn taking). CC takes place in physical spaces where group members...

Collaboration is an important 21st Century skill. Co-located (or face-to-face) collaboration (CC) analytics gained momentum with the advent of sensor technology. Most of these works have used the audio modality to detect the quality of CC. The CC quality can be detected from simple indicators of collaboration such as total speaking time or complex...

Unequal stakeholder engagement is a common pitfall of adoption approaches of learning analytics in higher education leading to lower buy-in and flawed tools that fail to meet the needs of their target groups. With each design decision, we make assumptions on how learners will make sense of the visualisations, but we know very little about how stude...

For decades, self-report instruments – which rely heavily on students’ perceptions and beliefs – have been the dominant way of measuring motivation and strategy use. Eventbased measures based on online trace data arguably has the potential to remove analytical restrictions of self-report measures. The purpose of this study is therefore to triangula...

Learning design models provide guidelines and guidance for educators and course designers in the production and delivery of educational products. It is seen as beneficial to base learning designs on general learning theories, but these must be operationalised into concrete learning design solutions. We therefore present one such educational design...

Learning analytics offers the opportunity to collect, analyse and visualise feedback on learning activities using authentic data in real-time. The REFLECTOR project was used to investigate whether there are correlations between students learning strategies, their online activity and their grades. Information about the learning strategies was obtain...

Teachers design learning activities purposefully to improve student learning. However, the impact of this is usually only evaluated after a course has ended by making use of self-reported data and assessment results. Learning analytics offers the opportunity to collect, analyse and visualise feedback on activities using authentic data in real-time....

Plain English summary Parents of children with physical disabilities do a lot to support their child in daily life. In doing this they are faced with many challenges. These parents have a wide range of unmet needs, especially for information, on different topics. It is sometimes hard for them to get the right information at the right moment, and to...
Conference Paper
Educational institutions are designing, creating and evaluating courses to optimize learning outcomes for highly diverse student populations. Yet, most of the delivery is still monitored retrospectively with summative evaluation forms. Therefore, improvements to the course design are only implemented at the very end of a course, thus missing to ben...
