Introduction
Working on issues of sustainable development (SD) for 18 years now - from different methodical angles, more on the practical (advisory) or more on the theoretical side.. and also with interruptions where I wandered other fields of interest (mostly cultural ones). From 2016-21, my main focus was the analysis narrative structures of SD discourse. Since 2020/21, this focus has shifted towards understanding and facilitating art-science cooperation for SD.

In this dissertation, I explore how the link between politics and theatre – which share a common origin in the Attic democracy – is preserved in contemporary Germany, i.e., whether theatre still serves as a “political public sphere” (the overall title of the thesis). In order to do so, the notions of “public sphere” and “the political” are thorough...

In this qualitative analysis of three municipal planning processes, the housing project "Grüne Heyde" in Norder-stedt is compared with projects in Hamburg ("Oberbillwerder") and Ludwigsburg ("Rotbäumlesfeld"). The former two are still being developed whereas the third was planned quite some time ago. In all three cases, special demands were made fo...

While the idea of extracting deep-seabed resources dates back to as early as the 1960s, it remained pure fiction for decades due to limited technical possibilities and prohibitive costs. In recent years, against the backdrop of changing technical possibilities and a persistently high demand for raw materials, deep-seabed mining (DSM) has returned t...

Although operational since 1994, there is still no commonly agreed definition of what the common heritage principle entails. The process of developing the ISA regulations for the exploitation of minerals from the Area, ongoing since 2015, has revealed a fundamentally different understanding of the common heritage princi- ple by States and stakehold...

An ambivalence of (dis)trust in experts is taking place in a world that is extensively shaped by them. Climate change, energy futures, global development and the treatment of refugees all bear the imprint of experts with their respective organisations and regimes of knowledge. This volume is about how economic and environmental experts came to acqu...

Economic growth as a policy objective remains consensual, but not unchallenged. The enquiry committee set up during the German Bundestag’s 17th electoral period has reproduced some of the arguments against said objective. Via content analysis of 120 official documents from the 18th electoral period, however, we show that this apparent learning proc...

Having been enmeshed in modernity’s quest for innovative progress on one hand, and in attempts at fundamental critique and warning on the other, academic research nowadays struggles both with a positive conceptual framing of sustainability transformations and with redefining its own roles vis-à-vis policy formulation and societal debate. Expectatio...

This article maintains that the failure of critique on - and alternatives to - economic growth to translate from academic and societal into day-to-day political discourse is only to be explained by looking closer at institutions and their discursive practices. Taking Germany and an empirical study about its parliament as an example, current politic...
