Introduction
I develop and test software to support creative processes and automate repetitive building information modeling activities. I am particularly interested in the practical application of automated and semi-automated processes in designing, planning and engineering.
In the past, I participated in various international research projects in the areas of optimization of structural components, interactive design generation and simulation of façade elements. My expertise in multi-disciplinary research in engineering, architecture and computer science targets the application of artificial intelligence to accelerate planning processes.

Generative design is widely used by architects and engineers to create innovative designs that catch the eye. However, this process involves user interfaces that need integrated design systems for combining structural optimisation and human-in-the-loop technology.
The system uses a standard mobile device for user input and facial expression analysi...
Interactive mass customisation is changing practice in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Future workflows in software systems could address human-in-the-loop technology to augment human creative capacities. Early design stages require quick and well-informed decisions in response to data available from building informa...
Virtual prototypes enable performance simulation for building components. The presented research extended the application of generative design using virtual prototypes for interactive optimisation of structural nodes. User-interactivity contributed to the geometric definition of design spaces rather than the final geometric outcome, enabling anothe...
The authors present an interactive design framework for grammar evolution. A novel aesthetic-based fitness measure was introduced as guidance procedure. One feature of this guidance procedure is the initial input of a reference image. This image provides direction to the evolutionary design process by application of a similarity measure. A case stu...

Urban Typogenetics investigates the use of machine intelligence for the evaluation of performance measures as a decision support system with a focus on urban aesthetics evaluation. This framework allows designers to address performance measures, urban measures and aesthetic criteria in an adaptive, interactive generative design approach. T...
Architecture and biology are fields of high complexity. Generative design approaches provide access to continuously increasing complexity in design. Some of these methods are based on biological principles but usually do not communicate the conceptual base necessary to appropriately reflect the input from biology into architecture. To address this,...

Typogenetic Design is an interactive computational design system combining generative design, evolutionary search and architectural optimisation technology. The active tool for supporting design decisions during architectural shape generation uses an aesthetic system to guide the search process. This aesthetic system directs the search process towa...
This position paper proposes and defines the nature of a framework, which explores ways of integrating control system (CS) with machine intelligence for generative design (GD). This paper elaborates about the implications of and the potential for impact on GD. The framework described in this work can be used as an active tool to drive design proces...

Additive manufacturing techniques and materials have evolved rapidly during the last decade. Applications in architecture, engineering and construction are getting more attention as 3D printing is trying to find its place in the industry. Due to high material prices for metal 3d printing and in-homogenous material behaviour in printed plastic , 3D...
Recent developments in Additive Manufacturing are creating possibilities to make not only rapid prototypes, but directly manufactured customised components. This paper investigates the potential for combining standard building materials with customised nodes that are individually optimised in response to local load conditions in non-standard, irreg...
This paper proposes a automated shape generation methodology based on grammatical genetic programming for specific design cases. Two cases of the shape generation are presented: architectural envelope design and facade design. Through the described experiments, the applicability of this evolutionary method for design applications is showcased. Thro...
Architectural science aims to understand the complex relationships of architectural systems to their environment. Environmental scientists can infer a specie's ability to adapt to different environments through a knowledge of the species and detailed data about its environment. Developmental biologists can then untangle how the organism developed f...
How can the geometric modification of surfaces affect airflow and enhance the thermal performance of ventilated facades? This study is an initial investigation into how surface articulation can affect air movement in a plenum between the shaped surface and the building, as a step toward the design of climate-specific ventilated facades, termed " Br...
