SCHINUS TEREBINTHIFOLIUS AS AN ALTERNATIVE NEW SOURCE ANTIMICROBIALS. This study aimed to characterize Schinus terebinthifolius leaf extracts and evaluate the activity antimicrobial against pathogenic bacterial species. S.terebinthifolius leaves were collected in the coastal region of Lagoa dos Patos, Rio Grande, RS (Brazil). Extracts were produced...

Wheat is one of the main cereals grown around the world and is the basis for several foods such as bread, cakes and pasta. The consumption of these foods raises a concern with food safety, as toxic substances such as acrylamide, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are formed during their processing. To assess the occurrence...

The present study evaluated the occurrence of 24 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments and shellfish (Anomalocardia flexuosa, Crassostrea rhizophorae, and Mytella guyanensis) of Todos os Santos bay (BTS, Brazil). Total PAHs levels ranged from 89 to 921 ng g-1 dry weight (d.w.) in sediments, and from 66 to 505 ng g-1 d.w. in shellfish...

Published in Aquaculture Brasil, vol.

Halophytes are salt-tolerant plants rich in bioactive molecules, consumed worldwide by traditional populations as vegetables and used to treat a variety of illnesses. Brazil has a diverse halophytic flora of species with high contents of free phenolic compounds in their tissues and known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities....

In this study Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), ochratoxin A (OTA) and zearalenone (ZEN) occurrence in fish feed, regarding its chemical composition, were investigated. Besides, AFB1 bioaccessibility to fish was evaluated by in vitro digestion. Mycotoxins were extracted by QuEChERS and quantified by HPLC-FLD. Results showed that 93.3% of the samples were contam...

The effect of the glow discharge cold plasma pretreatment (CPT) was investigated on the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of phenolic compounds from sea asparagus Salicornia neei. The extract was applied in dry fermented sausage (Italian salami). Thermal extraction methods demand a long processing time, are highly energy-consuming and cause irre...

Background: Soybean is widely used in food formulations; however, few studies on fungal or mycotoxin contamination have been undertaken. In this regard, the free, conjugated and bound phenolic compounds, as well as their antioxidant and antifungal potential, besides the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in soybeans were evaluated. Results: The con...

SEASHORE PASPALUM (PASPALUM VAGINATUM SW.) SALT TOLERANCE UNDER DIFFERENT CLIMATIC CONDITIONS OF THE SOUTHERN BRAZIL. Halophytes have the ability to grow and complete their life cycle in an environment under high salt concentrations. Paspalum vaginatum Sw. is a perennial grass with a worldwide distribution, occurring in salt marshes, mangroves and...

BACKGROUND Soybean is widely used in food formulations; however, few studies on fungal or mycotoxin contamination have been undertaken. Free, conjugated, and bound phenolic compounds, and their antioxidant and antifungal potential, were therefore evaluated together with the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in soybeans. RESULTS The conjugated and...

The production of glucose from cellulose requires cellulases, which are obtained from decomposing microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria. Among the cellulases, β-glucosidases convert cellobiose to glucose and have low concentration in commercial cocktails used for the production of second-generation (2G) ethanol. Genetic engineering can be used...

In several countries halophytes are commercially cultivated in low saline or even irrigated with seawater, as well as with saline aquaculture effluent, like a sea asparagus Sarcocornia ambigua, that show a biotechnological potential for bioactive compounds production. However, their recovery from matrix is sometimes inefficient because the lignocel...

Small succulent halophytic shrubs of the genera Salicornia and Sarcocornia (Salicornioideae, Amaranthaceae) are commonly named sea asparagus and consumed worldwide as green salad in gourmet food, as conserves, and beverages. Their shoots are rich in bioactive compounds and plants show high yields in a wide range of salinities, but little is known a...
Thesis
This thesis aimed to evaluate the effects of saltwater irrigation on growth, productivity and biomass chemical composition of a selected group of six Brazilian halophytes, as well as to test the antioxidant and nutritive potential of their biomass in the diet of the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. In order to characterize the chemical compositi...

In order to evaluate the impact of semi-intensive shrimp farming, comparisons between Control and Impact areas were made based on multiple lines of evidence using an asymmetrical design. Water and sediment samples were collected in four shrimp farms located in Todos os Santos Bay, Bahia, Brazil. Nutrients, trace elements and macrobenthic assemblage...

Among the various activities that are included in the aquaculture, shrimp farming stands out for its wide dissemination in various parts of the world. It is clear that, for decades, the global production and financial performance by shrimp farming achieved excellent results. However, it is also well accepted that the rapid and often uncontrolled gr...

A three factor Doehlert design was applied to optimize the extraction of elements in marine invertebrate samples (oyster, mussel and clam) using centrifugation with diluted acids. The factors were: concentration of acid mixture (HCl + HNO3 + H3CCOOH; 1–3 mol L− 1), centrifugation time (10–40 min), and rotation velocity (6000–10,000 rpm). In order t...
