Introduction
My main domain of interest is chronic musculoskeletal pain and movement-evoked pain. Physical activity is known to be an important key player in the treatment of pain conditions. However, pain response to physical activity can variate in pain populations. Some individuals experience increased levels of pain during physical activity and so dysfunctional responses in relation to exercise are observed.

Background Current low back pain (LBP) treatment might be improved by tailoring treatments to subgroup characteristics. The Start Back screening Tool (SBT) and Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) classify people with LBP into subgroups. It is currently unknown whether linear trends exist regarding somatosensory changes, psychological characterist...

Background Adequate energy and protein provision is mandatory to optimize survival chances in critical illness, prevent loss of muscle mass, and reduce length of stay. Data are available concerning feeding adequacy in intensive care unit (ICU) participants, but little is known about the adequacy in post‐ICU participants. This systematic review aime...

Objectives To investigate the relationship between offset analgesia magnitude and the responsiveness to conditioned pain modulation (CPM), temporal summation of (second) pain (TSP), and clinical pain severity in people with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods Electrical stimuli were applied to 88 participants with KOA to measure offset analgesia at...

The effect of body mass index on both spontaneous and assisted fertility is well known: both lower and high indexes are correlated with negative outcome including live birth rate. Asides the dysmetabolic infertility that can develop by inflammation, insulin resistance and hyperandrogenemia, psychological and social factors deserve attention: a sexu...
Article
Purpose: This review assesses the effect of electrotherapy (e.g. functional electrical stimulation (FES), motor and sensor therapeutic electrical stimulation (TES)) on muscle strength and skeletal muscle characteristics in individuals post-stroke compared to conventional or sham therapy. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in MEDL...

Introduction Muscle strengthening training (MST) and behavioural graded activity (BGA) show comparable effects on knee osteoarthritic (KOA) pain, but the mechanisms of action remain unclear. Both exercise-induced anti-inflammation and central sensitisation are promising pathways for pain relief in response to exercise therapy in patients with KOA:...

Background Long COVID is suggested to be present in 14 to 43% of COVID 19-survivors. Literature on this new condition states a need for a multidisciplinary approach including physical exercise and nutrition. The aim of the current pilot study is to investigate the feasibility of the proposed protocol to prepare for a randomized controlled study tha...

Background Long COVID is suggested to be present in 14 to 43% of COVID 19-survivors. Literature on this new condition states a need for a multidisciplinary approach including physical exercise and nutrition. The aim of the current UNLOCK study is to investigate the feasibility of the proposed protocol to prepare for a randomized controlled study th...

Background A growing body of evidence has demonstrated the importance of implementing movement-evoked pain in conventional pain assessments, with a significant role for psychological factors being suggested. Whether or not to include these factors in the assessment of movement-evoked pain has not yet been determined. Objectives The aim of this sys...

Objectives: Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) is used to test somatosensory functioning in patients with low back pain (LBP) and most performed on people with chronic LBP in secondary/tertiary health care facilities. Studies using QST-testing on LBP populations in primary care are scarce. Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) measures central sen...

Objective: To estimate the effects of musculoskeletal rehabilitation interventions on movement-evoked pain and to explore the methods/protocols used to evaluate movement-evoked pain in adults with musculoskeletal pain. Design: Systematic review with meta-analysis. Literature search: Three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopu...

Background Soccer is one of the highest risk sports for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. These injuries have serious long-term consequences and cause substantial socio-economic costs. The preventive effect of an exercise program is highly dependent on its components and the level of compliance. In Belgium, it is unknown whether non-elite...

Pain conditions are among the leading causes of global disability, impacting on global healthcare utilization (HCU). Health seeking behavior might be influenced by cognitive and emotional factors (CEF), which can be tackled by specific therapies. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the evidence concerning associations between CEF...

Ageing is characterized by a low-grade chronic inflammation marked by elevated circulating levels of inflammatory mediators. This chronic inflammation occurring in the absence of obvious infection has been coined as inflammageing and represents a risk factor for morbidity and mortality in the geriatric population. Also, with ageing, important pertu...

Background Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. The therapeutic management of patients with chronic LBP is challenging. Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of heat and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) combined on pain relief in participants with chronic LBP. Methods Fifty part...

The predictive value of the multiple hop test for first-time noncontact lateral ankle sprains. Background: Lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are very common sports injuries, cause high health care costs and are associated with postural control deficits. From a preventive point of view, clinicians should dispose valid field tests to identify athletes at...
