Adherence to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions may be challenging for adolescents, especially those concerned about social status. This study examined self-perceived popularity and reputation concerns as predictors of adherence to health guidelines and the effects of self-perceived popularity on adjustment. Adolescents ( n = 1,068, 14–18 year...

Self-regulation describes how individuals assess and adapt to demands within and across environments. Research accumulated over the past quarter century identifies self-regulation as a powerful predictor of children’s school success. However, studying young children’s self-regulation in school is challenging. Tools that are easy and efficient to ad...

Purpose: Children's engagement in self-regulation is a strong and positive predictor of their social and academic success, making self-regulation an important focus for caregivers and clinicians. The aims of this article are to provide a framework for understanding self-regulation and to identify strategies speech-language pathologists can use to...

Culturally diverse learners, that is students from cultural and linguistic backgrounds that differ significantly from their school context, populate North American’s 21st-century classrooms. Educators may struggle to meet the learning needs of children in culturally diverse classrooms. This study is part of a larger longitudinal study examining chi...

We examined how elementary-aged students self-regulation for learning (SRL) developed across the school year, using teacher reports (Self-Regulation in School Inventory; Hutchinson 2013). Findings demonstrated that students SRL did develop from Fall to Spring and that children whose SRL development was at risk tended to be younger than their peers.

This paper reports on two studies that evaluated the statistical validity of the Classroom Learning and Development Questionnaire as a universal screening and early identification observation instrument within the North American context. The Classroom Learning and Development Questionnaire was first proposed and tested in Hong Kong in the mid-1990s...
Article
Evidence is accumulating that young children engage in self-regulated learning (SRL). One challenge is obtaining valid and reliable measures of children’s SRL. The gStudy software and its associated Learning Kits hold promise in this regard. We used gStudy to trace grade 1 children’s SRL as they studied the lifecycle of frogs in the Lifecycles Lear...
Article
Self-regulated learning (SRL) involves metacognition, motivation, and strategic action, and self-regulated learners are successful in and beyond school. Therefore, studies of how SRL develops and, perhaps, how it can be taught, are needed. Our research examines whether and how beginning teachers can be mentored to develop practices that support ele...

Adaption-innovation is a construct of preferred problem-solving style; adaptors work best within clear guidelines and prefer to “do things better”, whereas innovators bridle at structure and prefer to “do things differently”. Adaption-innovation bears considerable putative similarity to self-monitoring and self-consciousness. In this study the rela...
Article
Self-regulated learning (SRL) researchers have paid relatively little attention to questions concerning (a) the level of experience and expertise required to create high-SRL environments, (b) how teachers acquire such expertise, and (c) how expert instruction needs to be to influence students' SRL positively. We agree with Randi and Corno (2000) th...
Article
We use the term "self-regulated learning" (SRL) to describe independent, highly effective approaches to learning that are associated with success in and beyond school. Research has indicated that fostering SRL in elementary school children requires a level of instructional sophistication and student awareness that may be beyond the capabilities of...

On the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory 1,106 Canadians scored as more adaptive than American and British standardization samples. Means for Canadian females and males were congruent with those in national samples from six other countries.
