Following the eighteenth-century political revolutions in North America and Europe – which were followed by the emergence of modern constitutional states – public education has been seen as a conditio sine qua non for integrating a linguistically and ethnically heterogeneous population into one nation. In 1792, for example, the French politician Lo...

Guided by a strong interest in social, cultural, and economic history, the case studies featured in the book rethink the actual value, the impact, and the ostensible purpose of school ac...

One of the central elements of the nation-building process in the 19th century was the attempt to homogenize the citizenry, i.e. to fabricate national citizens. Besides the military and church, schools were considered to be the main agencies capable of achieving this national homogenization. In this paper, focusing on the education in Switzerland a...

In early modern Europe, relatively few people received a formal education, let alone higher education. This was not only due to the lack of schools—actually, schools existed in most cities and in many a rural parish—but mostly because many people left school as soon as they had obtained basic reading and writing skills. The generally low level of f...

In this paper, we analyse the struggle for a unified style of writing in primary schools in the German-speaking part of Switzerland between the 1860s and the first decades of the twentieth century with regard to the contexts in which this struggle was embedded. In the late-nineteenth century, in German-speaking Switzerland, as in other parts of the...

In this chapter, we raise the question of what makes the Swiss case worth presenting to an international audience. We argue that Switzerland is an interesting case because Swiss formal education lacks much of the structural systematization a system of mass schooling is expected to have. A close examination of the formal schooling in Switzerland rev...

This paper refers to the thesis that statistics is not merely a reflection of ‚reality' but has a reality-constituting potential too. The paper shows how ‚the school-child' was conceptualized through statistics-in connection with school-related activities such as seeing, reading, sitting, and writing-as a scientifically defined, generic notion in t...

In the chapters comprising this book, several fundamental questions will be examined, including: Why were the school acts passed, and under what social and political circumstances? What was their content? What was their impact and significance? To achieve a comprehensive comparative an...

For centuries, Switzerland has been a multilingual country (which currently has no less than four official languages.) Furthermore, one of those languages, German, is characterised by bigraphism (i.e. the coexistence of two different type styles). This article discusses the role played by language and writing systems in the great educational scheme...

Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) was – and still is – one of the most famous Swiss pedagogues of the 18th and 19th centuries. He is known for his „revolutionary“ principles in education which he developed while he was the head of several pedagogical institutions in different Swiss Cantons. Particularly well known was his „method“, a mode of i...

It is the story of the introduction of new measures and weights and, in particular, the metric system in Switzerland over the course of the 19th century. School is also an aspect of this story, because it was an institution that was assigned t...

Project
In this project, I focus on the thesis that weights and measures are expressions of modes of thought. Or in other words: My basic argument is that weights, measures, and measuring practices are expressions of mentalities. The nineteenth century was the time when mentalities began to change on a large scale, and this is what my story is all about. I will focus on two historical phenomena: One is the occurrence and implementation of new systems of weights and measures, particularly the metric system. And the other is decimalized arithmetic. I will argue that both alterations in the way people weigh and measure and alterations in how they deal with numbers are expressions of alterations in their mentality. I therefore understand the metric measures and the decimal system as expressions of a mindset, which I call the metric mind. And I will also argue that in the nineteenth century, the shift from a “venerable” model of thinking (Crosby 1997) to the metric mind took place among the people in Europe and the USA when they were taught in schools how to use new systems of measurement as well as the decimal arithmetic.
