Issues: Serotonergic psychedelics (SP) are psychoactive substances that produce unique sets of subjective effects, such as hallucinatory experiences. This systematic review is the first to summarise which motives for SP use have been assessed in medical, psychological, sociological and ethnological research across different types of SPs and across...

Objectives: Both substance use, on the one hand, and the first signs of psychosis, on the other, commonly begin in adolescence. Adolescents with substance use disorder (SUD) frequently show recreational use of cannabis and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). When attenuated psychotic symptoms (APS) occur during the course of SUD, they are com...

Background Adolescent patients with a substance use disorder (SUD) often fulfil the criteria for a co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is not clear if these dual-diagnosed adolescents present with unique levels of substance use and how their substance use relates to PTSD symptom clusters. Objective To investigate substa...

Background: Serotonergic psychedelics (SPs) like LSD, psilocybin, DMT, and mescaline are a heterogeneous group of substances that share agonism at 5-HT 2a receptors. Besides the ability of these substances to facilitate profoundly altered states of consciousness, persisting psychological effects have been reported after single administrations, whic...

Both internalizing and externalizing psychopathologies interfere with the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD) in adolescents. Self-reports of psychopathologies are likely biased and may be validated with parental reports. We compared N = 70 standardized self-reports of adolescents entering outpatient SUD treatment (13.2–18.6 years old, 43% f...

Background: The use of psychoactive substances is related to a variety of motives, reflecting the plethora of subjective effects a substance may elicit. Serotonergic psychedelics (SPs) are substances that produce unique sets of subjective effects, such as hallucinatory experiences. This systematic review aims to investigate which motives for SP use...

Background: A common screening instrument for substance use disorders (SUDs) is the Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (DUDIT) which includes a short form regarding only drug consumption (DUDIT-C). We aim to assess if a German version of the DUDIT, adapted for adolescents, is a suitable screening instrument in a sample of adolescent psychiatric...

Background: Methamphetamine (MA) use has been shown to be associated with deficits in impulsivity, verbal learning, and working memory. Additionally, methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is related to various brain changes, especially in adolescent users who might be more vulnerable to detrimental effects on brain development. In our previous study, we found that prenatal trauma exposure leads to an anxiety phenotype in mouse pups, characterized by increased corticosterone levels and increased anxiety-like behavior. In order to understand the mechanisms by which aversive in utero experience leads to these long-lasting behavioral and neuroendocrine changes, we investigate...

Introduction: Methamphetamine (MA) use among adolescents is associated with a number of psychiatric symptoms such as depression or conduct disorder. Additionally, adolescent MA users might be more vulnerable to detrimental effects on brain development, such as reductions in global grey matter thickness, or levels of n-acetylaspartic acid in the pre...

Background: Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) frequently begins in adolescence, often accompanied by other psychiatric or mental disorders. Project
Throughout different projects, we want to elaborate clinically relevant issues regarding tobacco use in adolescents and young adults, i.e. a) use patterns, b) associations with mental health, and c) target group-specific interventions. We will use mainly quantitative methods, supported by qualitative interviews.
Project
We aim to study adolescent psychiatric patients (mostly outpatients) in the region of Dresden, Germany. Our reserach will focus: * substance-use patterns * biological mechanisms (e.g. epigenetic) * comorbid mental disorders and symptoms thereof * cognitive functioning interacting with substance use/abstinence * current and life stress (self-reported and through hair/saliva analysis) * psychosocial characterization including parental stress. In addition we aim to evaluate current treatment options and subsequently develop additional treatment options or test those with insufficient eviedence base in pragmatic field trials. Currently, we conduct such a trial on a self-developed manualized outpatient intervention for adolescents with substance use disorder (DELTA program).
