Introduction
Invertebrate paleontology is my major interest, particularly the taphonomic and paleoecological analysis of fossil assemblages and their applications in paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Thus far, my studies have focused mainly on Middle Devonian fossil assemblages from the Pimenteira Fm (Parnaíba Basin) and Maecuru Fm (Amazonas Basin). I have contributed to the development of four permanent paleontological exhibitions at the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, as a consultant and paleoartist.

Taphonomic signatures of brachiopod-dominated fossil assemblages from the Passagem Member (Middle Devonian: late early Givetian) are described in the present study. This rock unit (originally assigned to the Cabeças Formation, but actually related to the underlying Pimenteira Formation) is restricted to the eastern border of the Parnaíba Basin. It...

Manuscript received on December 3, 2008; accepted for publication on August 6, 2009; presented by ALEXANDER W.A. KELLNER ABSTRACT The depositional model of the Cabeças Formation is re-evaluated in the context of the Devonian paleogeography of the Parnaíba Basin, and with particular reference to similarities between the formation's facies associatio...

Although the Devonian invertebrate biota of the Amazonas Basin is incompletely known, its unusual mixture of supposedly Malvinokaffric and Appalachian taxa is of considerable biogeographical interest. The history of research on Devonian trilobites from the Amazonas Basin is summarized. These fossils occur in the Maecuru (latest Emsian – early Eifel...

Devonian trilobites are found in three major Paleozoic intracratonic basins of Brazil (Amazonas, Parnaíba, and Paran a). The trilobites represent the families Homalonotidae, Dalmanitidae, and Calmoniidae. The distribution of these taxa in the Brazilian territory is summarized here because of their remarkable scientific and historical importance, an...

The Cretaceous “high-fire” period was a global event that reached almost all continental masses during that period in Earth’s history. The extensive wildfires directly affected plant communities. Significant palaeobotanical records in the Antarctic Peninsula have been studied from the James Ross Sub-Basin, especially from the Santa Marta Formation....

Nature conservation largely focuses on biological assets, treating geodiversity as a minor concern. We formally define here cultural geology, cultural biology, and cultural taxonomy, as emerging scientific fields focused on assessing the impact of natural sciences and natural features in the culture. We propose them as fundamental tools for innovat...

The landscape of Rio de Janeiro manifests a controversial relationship between urbanization and geodiversity, which can be unveiled through geotouristic tours around the city. The local geodiversity set limits and provided possibilities for the occupation of the city, as observed in the transformations during its urbanization and in the presence of...

Devonian fishes from South America tend to be fragmentary and sparse, catching little attention for palaeontological sampling. However, some of these remains demonstrate a wide variety of fishes which help understanding environmental and palaeogeographic patterns across the Devonian. In the Parnaíba Basin, the occurrence of Devonian fishes was thou...

Antarctic corals are known from the Upper Cretaceous Santa Marta Formation (Santonian-early Campanian) and Gamma Member (late Campanian) of Snow Hill Island Formation (late Campanian–early Maastrichtian) but they have not so far been taxonomically described. We describe three corals taxa based on 29 specimens collected in 2007 and 2016 on James Ros...

The aim of this work is to value Kenneth E. Caster’s correspondence and field notebooks as Brazilian paleontological heritage. These data are usually underestimated in the Geosciences, although they have been used in the development of an inventory of the most valuable occurrences of Devonian fossils in NE Brazil. During his academic career, Kennet...

ICHNOFOSSILS FROM THE PARNAÍBA BASIN: THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF WILHELM KEGEL. A pioneer in the study of ichnofossils from the Parnaíba Basin, Wilhelm Kegel described materials collected from strata assigned at that time to the Pimenteira, Cabeças, and Longá formations. Since the mid-1960's these specimens remained without proper review and were housed...
