Introduction

This chapter focuses on the risk that, when citizen science is introduced in social environments different from those in the Global North where it originated, it may be subject to the error of providing the right answer to the wrong question. To avoid this type of errors, it is necessary to train those who participate in citizen-science studies: ci...

The mobilization of knowledge in society: A challenge for doctoral programs in the Latin American public University. Doctoral programs are particularly suitable to support the paradigm shift required by the university organization in order to increase its efficiency for processing available and the “new to be created” knowledge, based on providing...

The inclusion of digital technologies in our Latin American societies should be analyzed as an issue of technology transfer between different cultures. From this perspective it is easier to grasp the challenge involved in learning to make use of tools that reinforce a participative culture by solving problems based in accurate information, without...

The financing of the political parties is one of the main themes of current political debate. In Venezuela, the Constitution expressly prohibits any form of public financing for political organizations which, as demonstrated in research for this article, provokes negative reactions from party leaders. However, the problem is not the public or priva...

The uptake and metabolism of CH 3 ‐[ ¹⁴ C]tetrahydrofolic acid (MTHF) by rat brain was studied in vitro. At physiological concentrations, (10 ⁻¹⁰ m ), a small net uptake of the labeled compound was observed in whole brain, as well as in the cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem slices. The passive diffusion observed in the presence of KCN proceeded s...
Article
The activities of the two folate-dependent enzymes in the de novo purine biosynthetic pathway (e.g., glycinamide ribonucleotide transformylase and aminoimidazolecarboxamide ribonucleotide transformylase), have been evaluated as a function of age in crude extracts from rat brain, liver, kidney, and spleen. The activities of the enzymes in brain are...

Rats administered intracerebroventricular (IVT) injections of 3-Carboxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (I) or 6,7-Dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (II), the condensation products of formaldehyde with phenylalanine and dopamine, respectively, were evaluated in the open field and shuttle box situation. In the open field, 45 min after the acut...

1.1. This article reviews some important aspects concerning the chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology of Tetrahydroisoquinolines.2.2. Special attention is given to the hypothesis which attempts to explain the physiopathology of certain behavioral disorders observed after chronic ingestion of alcohol.3.3. The possible role of Tetrahydroisoquinol...

The catecholamines dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine are metabolized by oxidative deamination and by O-methylation. This latter pathway is catalyzed by the enzyme catechol-O-methyl-transferase (1); it utilizes S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe) as the methyl donor (Fig. 1), and its products are, for the most part, methylated on the metahydroxyl g...

The uptake and metabolism of CH3-[14C]tetrahydrofolic acid (MTHF) by rat brain was studied in vitro. At physiological concentrations, (10-10M), a small net uptake of the labeled compound was observed in whole brain, as well as in the cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem slices. The passive diffusion observed in the presence of KCN proceeded slowly,...
Article
The present observations indicate that in the adult rat brain, the activities of the enzymes involved in de novo methyl group synthesis are fairly stable, contrasting with the early development period where changes in methylene reductase, B12 transmethylase and serine transhydroxymethylase occur.
Article
— Animals maintained on rat chow and water ad libitum in quarters illuminated for 12 h/day show diurnal rhythms in serum methionine and brain S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) concentrations. Brain methionine exhibits no such variation, nor does the ratio of serum methionine to the serum concentrations of six neutral amino acids which are believed to comp...
Article
Rats deficient in folic acid were found to have decreased concentrations of S-adenosylmethione in brain, kidney, and liver. They also showed decreased concentrations of methionine in serum, but not in brain. Administration of l-dopa (a methyl acceptor) in doses comparable to those used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease caused significant redu...
Article
—Rat brain contains all three of the enzymes required for de novo synthesis of the methyl group of methionine (serine transhydroxymethylase, methylene reductase, and [B12]transmethylase) in activities comparable to those found in liver and kidney. The activities of methylene reductase in female kidney, and of [B12]transmethylase in female brain and...
Article
The disaggregation of brain polysomes which is produced by giving large doses of (L)-dopa to rats is not reproduced by administering its metabolite, 3-O-methyldopa, by giving D-dopa, which also depletes the brain of S-adenosylmethionine but is not converted to catecholamines, or by giving the L-dopa after a decarboxylase inhibitor. Polysome disaggr...
