In this article, we analyse the relationship between the foreign sector and the ‘Swedish model’ of welfare state since the 1960s. The initial hypothesis is that the old relationship between the foreign sector and the Swedish welfare state during the expansion phase of the latter was mainly complementary, almost symbiotic, thus adhering to the compe...
This article explores the evolution of Spain’s capitalism during the last decades in order to unveil the factors underlying the harshness with which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Spain. We present a twofold thesis. On the one hand, we argue that Spanish capitalism has harbored certain internal vulnerabilities, relative to its productive specia...

Welfare States are considered key tools to provide just transitions. The hypothesis of synergy states that Social-democratic regimes are in a better position to accomplish them. While synergy has been widely theorised, its empirical verification has remained less studied and provided contradictory results. The weaknesses detected in the state-of-th...
The global environmental and social crisis has motivated the renaissance of just transitions, this time centred around the effects on labour and income distribution of the shift to a sustainable energy mix. This renewed conception has gone beyond its origins in the US unions in the 1970s to become a key element in many discourses worldwide, with di...
The Welfare States are considered key tools to confront the social impacts of the ongoing energy transitions. The hypothesis of synergy states that Social-democratic regimes (Esping-Andersen) are in a better position to reach the Eco-social State, hence supplying justice in the process of transition. While synergy has been widely theorised, its emp...
Countries worldwide have committed to perform an energy transition to a low carbon scenario by 2050. Not only does it imply radical shifts in energy patterns, but also profound social rearrangements with asymmetric consequences. Focusing on this asymmetry, the notion of just transitions has recently (re)emerged from its unionist roots to grant a li...
The economic crisis has undoubtedly impacted welfare states through the austerity policies prioritised to purportedly lead economies back to a growth path. In this paper, we assess the effects of the crisis in those welfare states, focusing on income benefits and analysing cases of welfare state change before the crisis via gross replacement rates...
Although Spain’s economy was seen as a miracle during the most recent expansive phase (for its labour market outcomes in terms of job growth, among other things), the economy’s development during those years suffered from severe problems that deserve attention. This became more relevant in a context like the current one, where there is no consensus...
The expansive phase experienced by the Spanish economy had long been praised, described in the early 2000s as an ‘economic miracle’. However, the crisis that struck in the late 2000s would become the deepest that the country had endured since at least the 1970s, leading to the general conclusion that its prior success had been a mirage rather than...
The so-called ‘Spanish miracle’, beginning in the mid-1990s, eventually became a nightmare for the majority of the population, culminating in the present-day economic and political crisis. This book explores the main features of the Spanish political-economic model during both the growth and crisis periods.
Analyzing the causes and consequences of...
The economic crisis that started between 2008 and 2009 -depending on each country- has undoubtedly hit on welfare states through the austerity policies that have been prioritized in order to take economies back to a growth path. In this paper, we assess the impact of the crisis in those welfare states focusing on income benefits. We do so by using...

The issue of global economic inequality has increasingly drawn the attention of both scholars, NGOs and international institutions during the last decades. In addittion, the current economic recession has worsened previous trends of increasing inequalities. Drawing from the literature that deals with the effects of adjustment policies applied in se...
The goal of this paper is to analyse the effects of labour share divergence between Eurozone economies on rising income inequality and poverty. For this purpose, the literature on the relationship between the functional and personal distributions of income will be reviewed. In addition, labour legislation reforms in Southern countries will be analy...
The expansive phase experienced by the Spanish economy had been praised for long, labelling it, particularly in the media, an “economic miracle”. However, the bursting of the deepest economic crisis that the country had suffered from, at least, since the 1970s, raised important doubts about its real strength, leading to the general conclusion that...
This paper compares the financial and economic international cooperation of Venezuela and Brazil, which are considered major actors in Latin America. This performance has been possible thanks to the sustained economic growth, that provided a great amount of resources which have been channeled to cooperation policies, together with a renewed politic...

In this article, we will undertake a long-term analysis of the evolution of the Swedish welfare state, seeking to explain that evolution through the use of a systemic approach. That is, our approach will consider the interrelations between economic growth (EG), the sociopolitical institutional framework (IF), and the welfare state (WS)-understood a...
In this article we analyse the relation between the dynamics of economic growth and the welfare state using the Swedish experience as a case study. We defend three theses concerning the Swedish experience: that the deep economic crisis of 1990–93 constituted the definite breaking point for the accumulation pattern in force since the 1950s (and in c...
The electoral victory of the Frente Amplio (FA) in Uruguay in October, 2004, apparently represented
a break with the economic policies that had been implemented till then. Those policies were indeed
the same that lead the country to its deepest economic crisis between 1999 and 2002. In this article, we
analyse the process triggered by those reforms...

In this paper we will make a long-term analysis of the evolution of the Swedish welfare state. We will look for an explanation of that evolution using a systemic approach. That is to say, our approach will consider the interrelations between the growth dynamics, the socio-political framework and the welfare state − understood as a set of institutio...
