Article
Knowledge regarding continuous monitoring of wounds during the healing process may provide insights regarding when and how to intervene. Recently, wearable sensors have gained attention due to their ability for real-time health and environmental monitoring. Measurements of pH, oxygen, moisture, bacterial metabolites, temperature, and endogenous bio...
Article
Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) is a very common chronic and/or relapsing inflammatory skin disorder whose pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Yeast of the genus Malassezia has long been regarded as a main predisposing factor, even though causal relationship has not been firmly established. Additional predisposing factors have been described, inc...

his work reports a biosensor for monitoring xanthine for potential wound healing assessment. Active substrate of the biosensor has xanthine oxidase (XO) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) physisorbed on a nanocomposite of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNP). The presence of HRP provided a two-fold increase in...

Objective: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) comprise 80% of leg ulcers. One of the key parameters that can promote healing of VLUs is tissue oxygenation. To date, clinicians have employed visual inspection of the wound site to determine the healing progression of a wound. Clinicians measure the wound size and check for epithelialization. Imaging for tissue...
Article
Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is an uncommon inflammatory skin disorder, often associated with arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and/or hematologic malignancies [1]. A classic feature of PG is the development or worsening of lesions at areas that experience trauma, also known as pathergy. Autologous skin grafting may be challenging in these patien...
Article
Granuloma annulare (GA) is a fairly common inflammatory skin condition with a range of clinical subtypes. We describe an unusual case of unilateral GA confined to the thigh on a previously amputated limb. A man in his 80s with a past medical history of below-knee amputation of the left leg owing to severe leg ulcers from pyoderma gangrenosum, chron...
Article
Erosive pustular dermatosis is a rare inflammatory skin disorder characterized by crusted erosions, sterile pustules, skin atrophy, and scarring alopecia. Cases of involvement of lower extremities, with or without scalp lesions, have been scarcely reported in the literature, and have been denominated Erosive Pustular Dermatosis of the Legs. The dis...

Pili annulati is generally classified as a hair shaft disorder without fragility. However, increased susceptibility to weathering is common. Severe breakage due to trichorrhexis nodosa is uncommon. We report a case and review the literature on this topic.
Article
This work reports a bi-enzymatic biosensor for monitoring uric acid (UA) in biofluids extracted from wound, perilesional skin and healthy skin. The biosensor is composed of uricase (UOx) as a biocatalyst for UA oxidation, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) for electron transfer and a nanocomposite of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Au nanopart...
Article
Background: Various facial and extrafacial lesions have been reported in frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA). Facial papules have been associated with worse prognosis. Objectives: We sought to detect the prevalence of facial and extrafacial lesions and to analyze their relation to demographic and clinical variables in a large and ethnically diverse...
Article
Understanding and managing patients’ expectations can help improve their adherence to treatment for chronic wounds; however, little is known concerning about their expectations regarding healing time. Recruited subjects were asked to predict how long their wounds would take to heal and their charts were reviewed to retrieve real time of healing. We...

Background: Despite the development of numerous wound treatment alternatives, 25% to 50% of leg ulcers and >30% of foot ulcers are not fully healed after 6 months of treatment. Autologous skin grafting is a time-tested therapy for these wounds; however, the creation of a new wound in the donor area yields a considerable limitation to this procedure...
Article
Clear cell acanthoma (CCA) is a rare, benign cutaneous condition most often seen on the lower extremities. Lesions are of variable morphology and have been described as polypoid, pigmented, giant, and cystic lesions. Although no racial or gender predilection has been reported, CCA on the breast is a very rare finding that has been observed mainly i...

Introduction: Disseminated histoplasmosis is often seen in immunocompromised individuals, such those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The initial infection mainly involves the lungs but it may develop into a disseminated form especially in immunocompromised patients. Since it can be a systemic disease with cutaneous manifestations, d...

Wound management involves repeated clinical trips and procedures of lab tests over days. To eliminate this time lag and provide real-time monitoring of a wound’s progress, we have designed an enzymatic biosensor for determining uric acid (UA) in wound fluid. Uric Acid is a biomarker, having an established correlation with wounds and their healing....
Article
A wound is characterized as a disruption on the epidermis continuity of either skin or mucosa as a result of physical damage or an underlying disease. Dermatologic wounds may be produced by infection, prolonged pressure, malignancy, neuropathy, ischemia, venous insufficiency, inflammatory conditions, drugs, and external causes. The most common etio...
Article
Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) is a chronic, recurring inflammatory skin disorder that manifests as erythematous macules or plaques with varying levels of scaling associated with pruritus. The condition typically occurs as an inflammatory response to Malassezia species and tends to occur on seborrheic areas, such as the scalp, face, chest, back, axilla...
Article
Methotrexate toxicity in mucocutaneous areas is usually not associated with tissue eosinophilia. We describe a case of acute methotrexate-induced mucocutaneous erosions with interface dermatitis and eosinophils. A 76-year-old African-American woman with a history of bullous pemphigoid on methotrexate therapy presented with lower extremity celluliti...
Article
Postmarketing surveillance from men using finasteride, a 5‐alpha reductase inhibitor (5ARI), for male pattern hair loss (MPHL) includes reports of various forms of sexual dysfunction, such as decreased libido, erectile and ejaculatory dysfunction, and gynecomastia. Purported mechanisms for these effects include the decreased production of neuroster...
Conference Paper
A non-contact near-infrared optical scanner (NIROS) was used to obtain 2D tissue oxygenation maps of venous leg ulcers across weeks of treatment. The oxygenation differences between wound and background were similar as wounds began healing.
Conference Paper
Regions of reduced tissue oxygenation in diabetic foot ulcers were segmented using graph cuts algorithms. These segmented oxygenation maps were coregistered onto their respective white light images, during weekly assessment of wound healing.
Conference Paper
Near Infrared (NIR) imaging was performed on diabetic foot ulcers to obtain 2D tissue oxygenation maps during longitudinal studies of wound healing. The difference in wound to periwound’s oxygenation became insignificant as the wound healed.
Article
Introduction: Wound care dressings have evolved over time, from bandaging to the development of occlusive dressings to negative pressure wound therapy. A novel therapeutic delivery system dressing has been cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration. This semi occlusive wound dressing has been developed to provide local, continuous d...

Purpose of Review This comprehensive review covers the advantage and limitations of some dressing materials and the current knowledge on wound dressings and emerging technologies to achieve proper wound healing. Recent Findings Traditional and modern dressings are helpful in the wound healing process; however, they cannot substitute lost tissue. H...

Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) and dandruff are of a continuous spectrum of the same disease that affects the seborrheic areas of the body. Dandruff is restricted to the scalp, and involves itchy, flaking skin without visible inflammation. SD can affect the scalp as well as other seborrheic areas, and involves itchy and flaking or scaling skin, inflamm...
