ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to identify, categorize, explain and interpret the process of „John-Paul-the-Second-ization” which has been taking place for the last three decades in Poland. „John-Paul-the-Second-ization” is perceived as a kind of landscape sacralization, i.e. the process of filling the cultural landscape with objects and phenomena related to Pope John Paul II, his work and personality. The process is analyzed on three basic levels: architectural, nominative and temporal. The growing cult of the ‘Polish Pope’ is a visible sign of social, cultural, religious and political factors influencing cultural landscape.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the paper is to show spatial regularity of roadside memorialisation as well as public opinions on the phenomenon in Poland. Field studies covering 623 kilometres of public roads showed that among 100 roadside memorials the majority (98%) are memorial crosses A correlation between the distribution of roadside memorials and the road category and relate accident rate was noted. Internet questionnaires, on the other hand indicated that opinions on memorial crosses are nearly equally divided in Polish society: 52% are for leaving them along roads and 48% are for their removal. Furthermore, the analysis of web discussions showed that memorial crosses are seen by society either as traditional components of road infrastructure, or objects of religious cult, or cross cultural markers of death and grief.

ABSTRACT: This study follows author`s interest in urban religious naming of streets in various parts of Poland. First, this theoretical concept of functions of a street is explained, followed by an outline of history of streets and urban naming. Then there is a description of all Polish streets (19) under patronage of St. James. The aim of the paper is to prove the hypothesis that the streets of St. James are more common in towns and villages where: there is the Way of St. James or churches, chapels and figures dedicated to St. James. The study employs the method of analysis and criticism of written texts, of the investigation of documents and individual cases (including Polish Statistical Office database TERYT and 10 e-mails received from town halls), and of observation.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of the paper is the identification and interpretation of the dynamically developing contemporary mass event called the Cavalcade of the Three Kings (Orszak Trzech Króli). It was organised for the first time in 2009 in Warsaw. On the 6th of January 2014, about 630,000 inhabitants of 177 towns and villages, singing Christmas carols and wearing colourful crowns on their heads, publically celebrated the religious feast of Epiphany. In the author's opinion, the cavalcades can be perceived as a new phenomenon in public spaces placed between sacralization and festivalization because they have some components of religious events and festivals but they are neither. They seem to be a new hybrid event, with religious and festive elements.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of the paper is the identification and description of factors affecting the process of sacralisation as well as the implementation of theoretical concepts in a case study of the Baltic city of Gdynia. The time range of the research is limited to the postwar period (1945–2013). It has been assumed that the formation of any religious landscape occurs under two main circumstances : (1) the need to express faith and (2) the opportunity to do it. The former is an internal factor and depends on religiosity, while the latter is closely related to politics, environment, economy and social life. A detailed scheme was constructed around this statement in the form of a mapping sentence. The research is based on qualitative measures which include field observation, analysis of source documents, and an analysis and criticism of bibliographic sources. Visual documentation and participant observation have also been used. There are two main conclusions coming out of this paper. Although any religious landscape is a mixture of different factors, by the 1980s the sacralisation of Gdynia was determined mainly by political factors, and later by economic and cultural ones. Furthermore, for three decades some tendencies, typical also for the whole country, have also been recognised in Gdynia : monumentalism, privatisation of sacred sites and the " John-Paul-the-Second-isation " of public spaces.

Abstract The aim of the paper is to pay attention to crosses erected as in the past by the roads but nowadays associated only with sad events because they express pain after the beloved lost in accidents. Firstly, the selected literature have been presented which deal with not only the phenomenon itself in Sweden, Italy, the United States and Poland but also show the interpretation of the spontaneous memorial places as well. The other part of the article is focused on the examples of different forms of commemoration by the streets of Trójmiasto. Polarized opinions of the portal Trojmiasto.pl users on memorial crosses standing by the roads and streets, usually illegally, are the subject of the third and the most extensive part of the paper.

ABSTRACT: The Influence of Politics on the Erection and Development of Churches, Religious order Communities and Religious Names Given to Public Space in Poland. Case study Gdynia . The article is to illustrate, on the example of a city in northern Poland, the impact of politics on the erection and development of churches, religious orders and religious names given to public space. The history of religious communities in the Baltic city Gdynia, which dates back to the twenties of the previous century, shows that various factors influenced the establishment and development of religious communities. Apart from the natural environment (coastal location of Gdynia) and economic aspects (financial capacity of religious communities) the political environment, especially after the domination of the socialist system in 1945, is considered to be one of the most important factors. In terms of numbers, the development of Roman Catholic churches and order communities as well as places of worship of other religious communities is related to the political events in 1957 and in the eighties. A significant growth in the number of places of worship was noted in Gdynia following political transformations in Eastern Europe in 1989.
