Project
Cabo Pulmo, located at the Gulf of California entrance, is one of the most successful national parks of the Pacific area. Since its creation in 1995, the teleost biomass has significantly increased leading to an augmentation of top predator species such as sharks. In the difficult context of overfishing in the Mexican waters, this incredible success allowed the conservation of ecotourism activities and the preservation of endangered marine species. Two categories of sharks can be seen in Cabo Pulmo: local staying and highly migratory ones that can only be seen one part of the year. This project focuses on the trophic ecology of the main resident shark species in the area: blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus), lemon (Negaprion brevirostris) and bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas). The first objective aims at obtaining the first data describing their trophic ecology. It tackles the possibility of competition between top-predators inhabiting the same MPA and aims at resolving resource partitioning between them. For that purpose, biomarkers will be analysed at the LEMAR laboratory in France. Finally, the second objective aims at resolving the importance of Cabo Pulmo in these sharks’ movement by combining trophic markers with acoustic telemetry. Entrance and exit of the MPA will be recorded to possibly undelight resource dependency and therefore giving new insights on conservation problematics.
