Introduction
I am working on Stingless Bees biology and ecology. Currently, my main interests are topics related to beekeeping and bee biodiversity conservation. My research interests are also related to the generation of income to Amazonian traditional populations through beekeeping and natural ecosystems conservation.

With the growing demand for food production worldwide, natural landscapes are increasingly being replaced by agricultural areas, which directly affects biodiversity and local ecosystem services. Agroforestry systems, which are the intentional integration of trees and shrubs into crop and animal farming systems, are a more sustainable production app...

The stingless bee Melipona (Michmelia) seminigra Friese is a polytypic species widely distributed in Brazilian Amazon and Bolivia. Seven subspecies are recognized, four are described, which inhabit mutually exclusive areas in the Amazon basin, although zones of hybridization are recorded. The three other subspecies, despite being recognized by taxo...

Bees play a key role in ecosystem services as the main pollinators of numerous flowering plants. Studying factors influencing their foraging behavior is relevant not only to understand their biology, but also how populations might respond to changes in their habitat and to the climate. Here, we used radio-frequency identification tags to monitor th...

Honey pollen samples of Melipona seminigra pernigraMoure & Kerr 1950 sampled between 2017 and 2019 from experimental apiaries installed in campo rupestre on canga (CRC) vegetation of the Serra dos Carajás aimed to evaluated seasonal floral availability of undisturbed and mining-influenced areas. Around one hundred pollen types were identified mainl...

Bee flight capacity determines the area that a colony can exploit, and this knowledge is essential to formulate management and conservation strategies for each species. In this study, we evaluated the flight capacity of Melipona seminigra using radio frequency identification (RFID). Three questions were addressed: Do the RFID tags affect the flight...

Bees play a key role in pollination of crops and in diverse ecosystems. There have been multiple reports in recent years illustrating bee population declines worldwide. The search for more accurate forecast models can aid both in the understanding of the regular behavior and the adverse situations that may occur with the bees. It also may lead to b...

Determining bee flight capacity is crucial for developing management strategies for bee conservation and/or crop pollination and purposes. In this study, we determined the flight distance of the stingless bee Melipona fasciculata using the radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology. For this, we conducted two translocation experiments using wo...

The pollen content of honey samples collected in the years 2017 and 2019 from experimental apiaries of Melipona seminigra pernigra Moure & Kerr 1950 installed in campo rupestre on canga (CRC) vegetation of the Serra dos Carajás, southeastern Amazonia, was analyzed to understand the local variability of floral resources occurring on natural and dist...

Government and companies have tried to incorporate environmental consciousness into business over the last decades, especially in mining activities that may have irreversible impacts on the environment, especially in areas considered hotspots of endemism such as montane savanna (canga vegetation). Carajás region, southeastern Amazonia, presents the...

The stingless bee Meliponafuliginosa Lepeletier is described as being aggressive robber, but there is little information about its raids. Here, we describe two different raids of M. fuliginosa on other Melipona species: Melipona paraensis Ducke and Melipona fasciculata Smith. The robbing behavior was observed in the Volta Grande do Xingu region (Pa...

Bees have the potential to be used as indicators of environmental quality. The parameters typically analyzed in this context include species diversity, colony condition and foraging behavior. Bees explore the area around their nests, whose size and location vary based on the flight ranges and nesting preferences of the respective species. The envir...

The flight distance of bees determines the area they can explore. This area must contain the resources they need to survive and reproduce. It also influences their ability of migration and dispersion. Thereafter, understanding flight distance is crucial for comprehending bee ecology and management for pollination and/or conservation purposes. The a...

As stingless bees are important pollinators of wild and cultivated plants, their preservation is of vital importance to sustain the global ecosystem and to safeguard human food resources. The construction of large dams for the production of energy involves the removal of wide extents of riparian vegetation, where many species of bees, especially Me...

Despite the loss of the sting apparatus, Meliponini (stingless) bees have not lost their ability to defend themselves. Several defensive strategies have been described for the group, including biting and resin deposition. Defensive behavior can be mediated by chemical communication, for example through the use of alarm pheromones. The Stingless bee...

Stingless bees use nectar and pollen as their main food resources, and several alternatives to them have been investigated for beekeeping. This study evaluated nutritional alternatives for the Amazonian stingless bee Melipona flavolineata, looking for a substitute for honey and processed pollen. The following food replacements were compared to hone...
