Design today is intended as a specific methodological path activated by several actors and, at the same time, digitally mediated. This path is characterized by a growing cultural awareness that is shaping up around the axis data-digital-design (D³). Thanks to this axis, the contemporary paradigm shift in architectural design and product design are manifested through the digitalization of processes which is able to structure the data into useful information for the project according to evolved design optimization principles. Nowadays, the integration of algorithmic and parametric design in architecture is facilitated by the integration of Visual Programming Language (VPL) IT platforms into the design workflow. The VPL platforms can integrate and support the modelling software. It can also interface with the BIM platforms, with pure 3D modelling tools (Free Form) and all those reliable tools to optimise the digital project. An approach to architectural design through visual or traditional computer programming skills defines actions with new design terms such as coding and scripting. The designer, who approaches to the algorithmic aided design (AAD), can build his own geometric and logical context inside which he can discover new possibilities and new design solutions and, at the same time, generate and analyse each of them with a certain autonomy. This approach is diametrically opposed to the computer-based design approach used until ten years ago.
