Many authors in the field of Environmental Philosophy have claimed to be inspired by Spinoza's monism, which has traditionally been considered a form of pantheism because nature and God coincide. This idea has deep normative implications, as some environmental ethicists claim that wounding nature is the same as wounding God, which implies a resacra...

The Closing Circle: Nature, Man, and Technology (1971).

Environmental ethics is often seen as a branch of applied ethics whose task is to offer solutions to emerging ethical dilemmas in the context of ecology. In this paper, we challenge this assumption, showing how the object of environmental ethics raises questions that go beyond that of applied ethics. We explore how the environmental issues bring up...

The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the relevance of adequate decision making at both public health and healthcare levels. A bioethical response to the demand for medical care, supplies and access to critical care is needed. Ethically sound strategies are required for the allocation of increasingly scarce resources, such as rationing critical care bed...

This paper aims to determine whether it is necessary to propose the extreme of putrefaction as the only unmistakable sign in diagnosing the death of the human organism, as David Oderberg does in a recent paper. To that end, we compare Oderberg’s claims to those of other authors who align with him in espousing the so-called theory of hylomorphism bu...

In recent decades the concept of sustainability has gained great prominence in the public debate and academic research as well. The catastrophic emergency experienced by many countries with the COVID-19 pandemic emphasized the importance of bioethics for decision-making, both at the public health (equitable and effective policies) and at the clinical level. The crisis and the changes discussed in this book are not only environmental, but also socio-environmental: as humans, we are part of this crisis and responsible actors for finding possible solutions. We appear to live in a catastrophic era, better characterized as Capitalocene than Anthropocene, where unregulated capitalism, directly or indirectly...

Our lives are saturated with technology, to such an extent that we consider technological devices to be “essential” to live. In order to understand this existential situation, we have to return to the notion of technology (tecnos–logos). A broad definition led us to recognize all objects that are not “natural” as technological, changing the domain...

The aim of this paper is to focus on the idea of depth developed by Arne Næss, which is related both to his research methodology and some of its anthropological/cosmological implications. Far from being purely a psychological dimension (as argued by Warwick Fox), in Næss’s perspective, the subject of depth is a methodological and ontological issue...

The ecological issue lies at the heart of many contemporary debates and has recently been embraced within the realm of "religion", as the current ecological crisis questions our worldviews, obliging us to rethink our "metaphysical position in the cosmos". Most of the recent publications in environmental ethics are affected by a degenerative rhetoric, since they stress the human destructive power rather than its positive aptitude; in this regard, ethics becomes a “melancholic science”, as it drastically limits human impact on environment. This article argues that it is necessary to go back to Potter's proposal to rediscover a concept of bioethics wider than medical ethics, and strongly connected to environmental ethics. In the present paper we want to argue that Wearable Robots (i.e., technological devices used to restore the possibility of walking and re-establishing "normal" human life) should not necessarily be anthropomorphic, in order to respect human autonomy, freedom, and nature. Moreover, we argue that this non-anthropomorphism does not necessarily lead to...

More and more seems to be necessary to find new ways of communication between medical doctors and bioethicists in order to build a shared vocabulary and to prevent conflicts: many bioethical problems seem to be caused by the lack of dialogue between them, which both seem to speak two different languages. Improving this dialogue means searching new...

The aim of this paper is to assess a case report in the field of gynecology, starting from an ethical paradigm that relates primarily to the so-called "sources of morality" (objective structure, circumstances, aim).

Sustainability is not a very useful parameter to evaluate the morality of an act, since it is an empty concept and it is linked with several heterogeneous matters. Meanwhile, the concept of sustainable development lacks specificity, as defined in terms of future needs, which are very difficult to predict. As a guide for our actions the concept of s...

The focal point of posthumanism consists not as such in an a-critical acceptance of the technological promises, like there is for transhumanism, but in a total contamination and hybridization of human beings with other living beings and machines (these are the two main forms of contamination). The change of perspective untaken by posthumanism would...

Posthumanism is a myth. This does not mean to say that it constitutes a narrative devoid of any foundation, inspired by mere fantasy, far from it. The myth, as shown by Ries, Eliade and Lévi Strauss on several occasions, is based on something real and true, and appeals to conceptual structures that keep it away from a mere scientific report: having...
