Introduction
As a trained psychologist (University of Cologne and Konstanz), I was always fascinated by the influence of cognitive factors on sports performance, especially in children at a young age. In my research, I am now focusing on how cognitive and motor processes interact and develop during childhood, how they change with experience and whether they can predict future sports expertise. In my current projects, I want to better understand the interplay of sport specific and general cognitive processes and the relation to expertise in soccer, the interplay of cognitive and motor processes in climbing from a developmental perspective. Therefore, I conduct experiments, cross-sectional age comparisons, longitudinal and training studies combining cognitive and motor (vicon) measures.

Expert athletes are determined to make faster and better decisions, as revealed in several simple heuristic studies using verbal reports or micro-movement responses. However, heuristic decision-making experiments that require motor responses, also being considered as the embodied-choice experiments, are still underrepresented. Furthermore, it is le...

Interoception is an often neglected but crucial aspect of the human minimal self. In this perspective, we extend the embodiment account of interoceptive inference to explain the development of the minimal self in humans. To do so, we first provide a comparative overview of the central accounts addressing the link between interoception and the minim...

The goal of this paper is to explore how an embodied view can redirect our understanding of decision making. To achieve this goal, we contribute a developmental embodied choice perspective. Our perspective integrates embodiment and bounded rationality from a developmental view in which the body provides cues that are used in abstract choices. Hereb...

The tendency to think about or consciously control automated movements (i.e., move-ment-specific reinvestment) is a crucial factor associated with falling in the elderly. We tested whether elderly people’s movement-specific reinvestment depended on their past falling history and whether it can predict future error-prone movement. In a longitudinal...

Human motor skills are exceptional compared to other species, no less than their cognitive skills. In this perspective paper, we suggest that “movement matters!,” implying that motor development is a crucial driving force of cognitive development, much more impactful than previously acknowledged. Thus, we argue that to fully understand and explain...

Decision making is an important pre-requisite of soccer expertise. Beyond expertise, considering effects of environmental constraints on decision-making processes could help to specify existing theories. To address this gap, expert and non-expert soccer players were enrolled to test how environmental constraints (i.e., players’ perspective, time co...

Climbing to yourself - A developmental embodied cognition perspective on the relation between the minimal self and sensorimotor and cognitive skills: The objective of this project is to understand the bidirectional link between the minimal self and sensorimotor as well as cognitive skills from a developmental embodied cognition perspective. By integrating cognitive, developmental and movement science, we tackle one of the ultimate goals of the SPP call by exploring how core mechanisms (i.e., internal models, reafferences) generate a self in the course of ontogenetic development (i.e., across the lifespan) or the acquisition of expertise (i.e., training sensorimotor and cognitive skills).
