Introduction
Currently, I am working on my doctral dissertation, which explores the conditions of social change through public interest/strategic litigation in Germany and the US. Besides my primary focus on courts, litigation and social movements, I am interested in critical legal theory and socio-legal research methods. In addition to my PhD, I am working on a research project on the enforcement of anti-discrimination law in Germany and am involved in a graduate network on socio-legal methods.

This working paper contributes to the growing field of socio-legal research on the topic of migration in Germany. It outlines a genuinely interdisciplinary research agenda for studying (German) administrative law as a central arena in which both notions of statehood (governed by the rule of law) and notions of citizenship are practiced, negotiated,...
Article
Contemporary analyses of the stakes of legal sociology in Germany range from crisis to relaunch. One symptom – and possible cause – of the proclaimed crisis is the lack of training opportunities and spaces for graduate students interested in conducting socio-legal research. In 2018, an initiative of graduate students called the Socio-Legal Lab was...

In recent years, a number of litigation collectives have emerged that choose strategic litigation as a formalized way to review state action. Critical voices regard this as a problematic form of interest politics. In contrast, this contribution argues that strategic litigation promotes the democratic control of state power. Litigating collectives a...

Conference Paper
Within the European Union, various forms of exclusion can be observed. While European border countries construct physical barriers, landlocked countries like Germany address questions of access via law and the access to rights. This is manifested in the graduated set of rights migrants are granted by immigration law depending on their formal legal...
Article
The workshop report reviews the panel discussion and program of the second Socio-Legal Lab, held on January 18, 2019. The workshop was based on key debates that had animated the first workshop: the relevance of a turn to socio-legal research among graduate students, conversations on the intersections of law and society and finally ways to reconcile...

Conference Paper
In Germany, with recent dynamics of migration catalysing in a heated public debate and far- reaching changes in both legislation and legal practice, litigation as an instrument to strengthen social justice has gained importance in the field of migration policy. Sociolegal scholarship traditionally and recently has scrutinized a 'myth-of-rights', i....

The workshop, which was supported by the Law and Society Institute Be...

The Socio-Legal Lab is a graduate student network that was founded in 2018 by Siddharth de Souza and Lisa Hahn. It provides a space for discussion for PhD students who would like to apply socio-legal methods in their research projects but face theoretical/methodological challenges in doing so. We organize workshops, film screenings, summer schools and informal get-togethers in order to encourage both offline and online conversations among researchers and practitioners who are engaged in working at the interface of work on law and society.
