Introduction
My research focuses on the study of fossil birds in order to disentangle their paleobiogeography, paleoecology and adaptations to past climate oscillations. I also study bird remains from Palaeolithic archaeological sites to explore the dynamics of the interactions between men and birds during Prehistory.

Investigation of ecological responses of species to past climate oscillations provides crucial information to understand the effects of global warming. In this work, we investigated how past climate changes affected the distribution of six bird species with different climatic requirements and migratory behaviours in the Western Palearctic and in Af...

Several large-bodied hominin and nonhuman primates have coexisted in the Cradle of Humankind in South Africa during the Early Pleistocene. Previous paleoenvironmental studies regarding the Plio-Pleistocene of South Africa have focused heavily on mammal assemblages. Here, we conducted a comprehensive taxonomic analysis of the fossil bird remains fro...

The Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition, between 50 000 and 40 000 years ago, is a period of important ecological and cultural changes. In this framework, the Rock Shelter of Uluzzo C (Apulia, southern Italy) represents an important site due to Late Mousterian and Uluzzian evidence preserved in its stratigraphic sequence. Here, we present the r...

We present a detailed paleoecologic analysis of avian assemblages from the Mousterian layers of the Middle Paleolithic Grotta del Cavallo site in southern Italy. Findings improve knowledge of the landscape that was exploited by Neanderthals. During the MIS 7, 6 and 3, the cave was surrounded by extensive grasslands and shrublands, locally intersper...

Evidence of human activities during the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition is well represented from rock_shelters, caves and open_air sites across Italy. Over the past decade, both the revision of taphonomic processes affecting archaeological faunal assemblages and new zooarchaeological studies have allowed archaeologists to better understand...

The taxonomic and taphonomic analysis of the bird fossil remains from Buso Doppio del Broion Cave (Vicenza), located in the Berici Hills in NorthEastern Italy, are presented herein. The investigated deposits are referred to the end of MIS 3 and the boundary with MIS 2, in a phase of climate harshening. At least 44 species have been identified in th...

We present the fossil bird assemblage from the Middle Pleistocene deposits of Cava di Breccia di Casal Selce, which is one of the many fossil localities in the Ponte Galeria area (Roma, Italy). The fossil avian assemblage here described also represent one of the oldest Italian Pleistocene ones well described and highly differentiated. We detected t...

In this work we show the potential of bird remains as environmental and climatic proxies, reconstructing the environmental scenarios of the piedmont area of NorthEastern Italy across the MIS3/MIS2 boundary, on the basis of the fossil avifauna that we found in Rio Secco Cave (PN) and Buso Doppio del Broion Cave (VI) in the Berici Hills. The results...

The avian fossil assemblages from the late Pleistocene deposits of the Rio Secco Cave (north-eastern Italy) is presented herein. We studied the layers that date back to the end of MIS3 and the beginning of MIS2, which also contain evidence of Gravettian frequentation dated to 33.5-30. ka cal BP. The systematic analysis revealed the presence of 18 s...
