Hydrobiidae is the most diverse and species-rich freshwater gastropod family in the Palearctic. Their diversity in the Caucasus region remains largely unexplored and the phylogenetic relationships with European taxa have not been estimated yet. The primary objective of this study is to perform a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the stygobiotic Hy...
A new stygobiotic species of water louses of the genus Proasellus Dudich, 1925 (Crustacea: Isopoda), P. mikhaili sp.n., is described from springs and groundwaters in the vicinity of the town of Tuapse on the Black Sea coast of the northwestern Cauca-sus, Russia. Representatives of this genus are reported for the first time from this coastal area. T...
The Caucasus is one of the most unique, interesting and, at the same time, understudied regions of the Palaearctic in terms of zoogeography and freshwater hydrobiology. Both the southern and northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Range boast a wealth of underground aquifers, leading to an abundance of watered caves and springs. The Hydrobiidae fam...
Since 2020, the south-western Caucasus has been recognized as a hotspot of stygobiotic Mollusca diversity after revealing a large number of new, range-restricted species within the spring snail family Hydrobiidae, subfamily Sadlerianinae sensu Szarowska. Meantime, based on extensive material collected in the south-western Caucasus during the last d...
Among the great diversity of hydrobiid snails, the taxa that have adapted to live in groundwaters and cave reservoirs are of particular interest. Though this family is extensively studied, most information on its taxonomy, diversity, and ecology is based on material from European countries, whereas other regions remain relatively understudied. Here...
The species of the Ponto-Caspian gastropod genus Clathrocaspia Lindholm, 1930 have been recorded so far from the Caspian Sea Basin only from marine waters, whereas they inhabit the estuarine areas as well as the purely freshwater environments in the Azov–Black Sea Basin. This genus has recently been assessed as putatively extinct in the Caspian Sea...
A taxonomic revision of the stygobiont microsnails from northwestern Transcaucasia (Krasnodar Krai, Russia) is presented. Two new genera-Schapsugia gen. n. and Tachira gen. n. are established. It is shown that the genus Paladilhiopsis does not occur in this area, and the snails previously assigned to this genus belong to Schapsugia gen. n. Two nomi...
A new genus of stygobiont hydrobiid snails, endemic to Georgia, is described. Sitnikovia gen. nov. includes two species: S. megruli sp. nov. and S. ratschuli sp. nov., known only from their type local- ities (Garakha and Sakishore caves). The data of shell characters, penial morphology, and radula of the new genus are provided.
